OKAY EVERYONE LISTEN UP, I HAVE THE SOLUTION!! Okay, my '04 LHD did the same thing, drove me nuts! Every time I got in I had to hit the down button anywhere from 3 to 12 times to get the wheel down. After about 1/2 way it would then go down fine, just like this one. Up was no problem, just the down. So I was reading up in the online Jaguar forum from someone else with this issue when someone else chimed in with this fix - and it works!! In that wire loom from the motor is a white wire with blue tracer ... CUT IT!!! That's right! It worked for the guy on the forum, then others wrote in that it worked for them too. So I did it on mine, and it works!!! Actually I didn't exactly cut it (even though everyone else does). I don't like doing something I can't un-do so I probed around in the connector and just pulled that wire out. I taped up the end though it would've made more sense to just plug it back into the connector in an unused cell. IN ANY CASE, MY COLUMN HAS WORKED PERFECTLY EVER SINCE!! The ONLY thing it does different is that when you pull the key out, though the column immediately goes up and parks, there is about a 7 second delay before it retracts back in ... big deal. So that's the fix for the things, everyone seems to agree including myself, it's been about 2 years now and I've forgotten how much it used to bother me. White/blue wire, CUT IT and be done with it!!

Thanks for your comment. I had read that on the forums too and is certainly and acceptable fix. While good second hand motors are available for just £20 I wanted to keep the car as stock as possible. Next time I might have to consider the snip and wrap method.

@@ccuk I totally agree, that's why rather than cutting I just removed that wire from the connector. In about 4 seconds I can stick it back in and be right back to original. If you do that put some tape over the end, there is

Hello John, With regards to the motor you replaced under the steering wheel for the up and down positions of the steering wheel, does that motor also give the in and out positions? I have up and down but no in and out just a funny clicky noise. Kind regards, Jon Slade

I have not had that issue but I have heard that the drive cable can round off. This is an extract from the XK8 Bible written by Gary R. VanRemortel. This can be downloaded from the 'To the Garage' website. I hope it helps. John. Reach drive uses short cable JLM12187C that eventually fatigues and birdcages if continuously driven to limit. Replace with 3.9” [100mm] long piece of Ø.219” [5mm] Stainless-Steel rod with last .850” [22mm] of each end ground .150” [4mm] square

I am having the same issue and was about to ask the same issue on here. Did you manage to fix the in and out issue?

May it be that the steering motor you placed be for a Left hand drive XK?
@ccuk3 жыл бұрын
Hi. That is a possibility. I had not thought if that. Although the part number matched so I would have expected everything to be the same.

Hi there. You only talked about the control up and drown and it now working. Did you also have an issue with the column moving in and out also and not? Thanks
@ccuk3 жыл бұрын
It was just the up and down movement that was an issue on my car. Second hang reach motors are readily available too.

@@ccuk Thanks for letting me know. My problem is with the reach and need to determine if it’s the motor or the spindle thing

I've just checked my spare and the wires are the same as the one you took off, i.e. red on the left so that is factory correct. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help. When it stops snowing I will check the wiring orientation of the motor I have fitted. I'll you know what I find.

My problem is the reach, that is the column going in and out. Is there anyone out there that knows how that can be done and perhaps do a video like this one. My motor works clicking but no movement. I suspect it is the square cable end gone round.
@ccuk2 жыл бұрын
Hi Don. I don't have any experience with the reach motor. Did you get it sorted?
@donanderson2 жыл бұрын
No. Still haven't attempted it yet. It's still on the back burner at the moment. I would like to get it done at sometime but as it happens the steering wheel is in the position that want it and I and would probably never move it anyway.

Is your new/second hand motor off a left hand drive car?
@ccuk3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jonathan. I have wondered the same. I would expect the steering column for both cars to be the same. Maybe someone will be able to confirm that.

I will take a look Graham. I had an answer on Facebook that the early and late cars have different wiring looms and he had come across similar issues of wired being transposed. Perhaps I have an early motor. Strange because there is only 1 part number available.
