What brought me here - is the fact that I was present in an East Harlem club in 1974 -and discovered Gil Scott Heron and his epic "Whitey on the moon". That was a shock to an 18 year old "whitey" frorm Norway. Mr. Scott Heron has been important since that day

This song is incredible, but what I think draws me to it the most is how such a legendary old-school artist made such a ground-breaking modern album. Most people his age and from his era would have made something that sounds like it's decades old, but Gil made an album that not only sounded current, but was actually quite experimental for the time. I know he didn't make the beats, but he made great choices in the producers he used on this album. RIP Gil, a genius and an innovator his whole life.

Gil Scott-Heron was a musical genius, and like so many before him, he lived a tragic life. He was so perfectly in tune with what was going on in the Country in the late 60's and early 70's, he portrayed, almost brutally, the absolute truth in his recordings, and none so harsh as his best recording of all time, H2O G-A-T-E Blues from the Winter in America Album. He is missed sorely, and we need a voice like his to resonate down the halls of time to reveal the true ugliness going on today.
