Succumbed is typcially followed by the word "To" not "from"... if someone "succumbed to their injuries" they failed to get better from them and passed away. "succumbed from their injuries" is not a correct statement which in turn is why both of them thought it was a positive thing and they got better from the injuries. you are using "from" as a form of past tense which makes you initially think said persons injuries are better in some way
