It's disappointing to see how game development has progressed from genuine passion to seeking most profitability it's very clear nowadays how sloppy game devs have become It's sad to see how rapidly the technology for gaming has advanced, but at the same rate most development companies have only gone down in quality of products; I can't imagine a single big release in the past few years that didn't have some kinda flaw that kept it from being a great game, many of which getting "fixed" retroactively instead of having that additional quality upon release

Funny how high some of us has set the bar for gaming after we've experienced games similar to L4D2 at the time: "Imagine in 10 years we gonna have insane games with better graphics, physics. gameplay." And here we are 90% of all games released are absolute trash and the remaining 10% are still mostly a shadow of what game development was back at the time. Technology is there but the effort is nowhere to be found.

I'd say it depends on the game and franchise, cause while it's true that the majority has gone downhill there's still a lot of good games even today, you just need to lean more into the indie side of things which is how studios used to be back then, a small group of people making games for passion.

Hard disagree. Valve are a top tier developer. 10 years ago 90% of games were absolute dogshit compared to current standards. Some standout developers exist, just like today, but you are forgetting all the garbage that also came out. Sure there is still garbage today, but that garbage is usually far better then the garbage of 10 years ago. The moment Chet Faliszek said near the end "And it'll be quality" just broke my heart because very few game developers are even remotely allowed to care about that stuff nowadays. You mostly see it in some indie games because they're their own boss, they don't have to answer to none but themselves so they are able to work on everything for as long as they want to make sure it's working. But pretty much every Triple A game company now has a board of directors who don't even know shit about the games they're in charge of and just want the revenue, so they make their developers rush games to get that quick buck, forcing them to not give the project any passion or extra care to ensure it's good enough.

The reason Valve makes such amazing games every single time is because they have the mindset of; "The fans are the reason we exist" Because they understand this, they spend more time catering to the expectations of fans and making sure that their products have time, effort, and passion pumped into them. Those are the three ingredients to a good game. Even a small indie dev team can do this. It's mostly just sad that all the big AAA companies have degraded so much because they know their IP's legacy will make them money. That's especially true for COD and Halo. It's just about money these days. I wish it were different, but that's not how capitalism works. I mostly just look forward to releases from small game devs these days. At least those devs aren't in it for money.. yet. Here's some games I'm waiting for: ARK 2 Silksong Hytale Sons of The Forest These are all 2023 except for Hytale, which I anticipate the most. They're sort of pulling a Valve and spending as much time as possible to make a game that will meet and even exceed all expectations, which is what I like about small teams like Hypixel Studios. They focus on time, passion, and effort to make a game with the highest quality possible.

Even when it comes to less technologically impressive valve games like Dota 2, I don't think any company can approach their functional style. Their sound design for example is unparalleled. I can hear any ability, attack sound, or item noise with a blindfold on and tell you what's happening on screen. They aren't as flashy as other studios, but every game asset will be tailored to be immediately recognizeable.

I love this game, having achieved 3100 hours in the Steam version I can say I've never got tired of it. Just imagine this game having a fuckton of replayability on the base game, now, quadruple it with the absolute ton of mods the workshop has. It's just always different in one way or another. Another thing I don't understand is why people think the game's dead or something. Like sure, it doesn't have the playerbase CSGO or Apex Legends has but the game isn't dead at all. You don't even have to queue up or make a lobby to play, you just find a match and start playing. It has official servers, it has community servers, there's even community servers with a COMPETITIVE game mode called Zonemod or Confogl, which are used in tournaments or scrims and you will always find good, experienced players if you want a challenge. I would like people to play and stop thinking they're gonna be waiting 30 minutes for a match because there is people who still play it regularly

It's also possible that they didnt have the resources make a campaign versus multiplayer but it's also possible that they were afraid that it won't develop an esport scene if they added one due to the casual nature of the game mode

Its not about Dev Laziness, more so the executives finding all sorts of ways to cut costs, and often times its the devs themselves that are let go, so as time goes on, there are less devs working on ever bigger and bigger games. The one singular exceptions I can name is Cloud Imperium Games with Star Citizen. Those guys are the opposite; finding ways to extend development time, but at the detriment of the final game, and the performance of the game itself.

There is one that is close to what XQC said about the AI animation thingy, it's Euphoria, by NaturalMotions (look it up), it's barely used since it's very expensive and complex to implement, the code's a mess. Euphoria is used in modern Rockstar's games, you know those stellar animations and seamless ragdoll blending in GTA V/RDR 2? It's because of Euphoria, Games using Euphoria are barely not a thing, except games made by Rockstar.

maybe i was too young or maybe i, like alot of people didnt notice the tiny details that had countless hours spend thinking up, writing, coding, etc. But l4d 1&2 had so much soul poured into it, and (this line's been used alot but) "games these days" are just lacking in alot of quality and good gameplay, whether its due to greed or trying to save a buck, just makes games really boring. Developers like Puppet Combo and similar developers make horror games with "ps3 graphics" so they can focus less on glitches and special effects or trying to implement expensive animations or whatever and focus on making the gameplay and levels more in depth and an better experience. (along with them being small indie game developers where they arent some big company trying to shave off money for their budget) Also, it just pissed me off so much watching this when it came out and seeing how these 4 or 5 scumbags use l4d's name to promote their shitty knock-off game that is honestly, just a cashgrab, and back when Gaben when developing/promoting l4d2 said "one of the concerns that were raised is; what's different enough about l4d2 to justify it being a good enough sequel?" - "and doing anything we could to make sure our fans, who are the reason we exist, understood why l4d2 was a really positive evolution, rather than us just trying to come up with a way of stripping money out of a successful and popular game" which just goes to show how much we took for granted back then and how scummy developers nowadays are, they had a small part of the print in the credits of an amazing and massively popular game and wanted to cling to that title that gave them the tiniest bit of fame/wealth. (if it even did with how small a part they played)

I'll never forget L4D1 was one of the first games I ordered after seeing my irl friends play with the intention to play with them, then after I received my pc copy from HMV they immediately stopped playing, I played with random public for many months and loved it, I modded a tiny bit (Yoshi tongue, little less conversation johnny bravo tank) and loved it. Nothing has come close to it. L4D2 was "better" but lost some heart (and 80% playerbase) could not relate to the characters, everyone hated rochell, EVERYONE loved Zoe. I will play it again when times are better, it's dangerous to relive the past, replaying Payday1 taught me that. >That chill when you first hear the tank music with nothing in sight, goddamn that's gaming.

This is precisely why I believe there will be no Left 4 Dead 3 even though I want it so much. They pretty much got most of the cool things a zombie apocalypse run and gun game can have. If they were to make another game, they would need to have to abuse something new, like how Half Life series releases evolves with gaming technology. It's like how people ask for Bully 2 from Rockstar, but there is little that they can add that will make Bully 2 be worth buying, most of the things from a school game was already well captured in Bully 1. If anything, their only choice is a remaster, and remastering a masterpiece is not easy.

When chat was talking about the mocap they're like "its expensive". Brother EVERYTHING IS EXPENSIVE JUST MAKE THE DAMN GAME, YOU HAVE A BUDGET the only reason game devs don't make good shit anymore isn't because they cant, but because the bigger corps that baught them force them to release the game in beta form and they get shit on by their communities and punished and/or discontinued because the 70 year old fucking pharaoh big corp guy that owns them can't understand the simple fact that games not only need more time to be finished but that if you rush the development process you just end up with a buggy souless prodect made only to be a damn cashgrab. Game devs used to be pushed to make perfection which was stressful and hard, but now it's just a matter of how little they can do to pass the bar and grab a quick buck for the leaching companies. That's not what game devs want, but it's what's expected of them.
