Put the De compressor cable back on. It will save the inner kick start gear. I know it's only 200 cc but the gear gets quite a bit of stress tension. I had a 1975 elsinore cr125 .This was only a 2 stroke but the same gear would strip out. If you think about it they designed it that way so if they thought it did'nt need it it would have been cheaper to manufacture for them. Never the less have fun riding.

@aussiefarmer8741 - yes agree, they actually have more compression that you think! I have considered just that but I think the gear is on borrowed time now. The XR is 41 years old now. I think a winter strip now and rebuild bits and pieces is on the cards. I have noticed a bit of smoke appearing on deceleration indicating stem seals and valve guides will need attention. Thanks so much for watching the video and your advice is great :)

What do you consider a proper chain lube ? Did you replace the seat cover it is great shape, if you did where did you get it from ? Back in June I found a shed find, 1982 XR200r in good shape for the age , my bike has a speedo from factory. Did you remove yours ? Seems the XR200r's from 1981,82and 83 have quite the fan club. Best of Luck and Skill .

@speedwaystevecronk6680 - the best chain lube I've found to work is Motul Off Road chain lube. Works a treat. Yes, I replaced the seat cover. There a place here in NZ that does excellent reproduction ones called Charmans. I'll post the link on this page. It was a bit of mission to put on as they all are. Using a hairdryer helped to stretch it on. There are little sharp tacks on the base which you have to push through. Some of them broke off due to age so I used an air operated staple gun for some. I haven't bothered with a speedo due to just be racing it in VMX but I did buy a new speedo mount and also a headlight.. Yes they are definitely the ones to have :) Thanks for watching my video and enjoy your XR :)
