Great video series on the SX-1280 Tony. I've owned one of these since the 1990's and have worked on it a few times over the years. I've also serviced/restored a couple of others for customers so very familiar with the inner workings. Your uploads are always interesting and I learn something new from watching your content even if it's a minor detail or note. Thanks a lot for doing what you do 😊 Thinking I might treat myself to those new power supply boards for mine!

Awesome to see the finished product Tony! Someone is going to be very happy. I guess you changed your mind and are still on the lookout for a 1980 for yourself 😉

Nice job Tony. Very fine work indeed. These monsters are not easy to work on. I've just been through the same hell with a Pioneer SA 9500 mk1. Lovely amp but a nightmare to service. Still it sounds amazing so it's worth it. I hope someone enjoys that big receiver and doesn't abuse it. I sold a SX1980 to a guy 20 years ago and he used it as a guitar amp because it had a mic socket. Blew the whole thing to hell within a week and wanted a refund! They're all out there. LOL. I look forward to your next challenge.

I should have bought a couple of these when the prices were lower, but never found the right deal. However, I do have 2 SX-1050's that let me enjoy that Pioneer sound from the 70's.

Great series, love all the videos. If you do put the SX-1280 up for sale what would be the asking price if you don't mind.

yup. 240wpc@8 ohms is what the 2 i did pushed. was hoping that you'd hook up your big resistors and do a 4ohm test, i tapped out at 300wpc@4 ohm because i did not want to smoke my resistors. one of the 1280s sold for $4500 a few months ago. as far as i know, the other has not been sold. i don't really talk to the owner any more.

Great series, thanks for sharing. I believe you used to measure power based on PP voltage with a scope when the amp has a 1khz (and other) sine wave going in and the L/R channels connected to an 8ohm resistor. I find this doubles at adding a visual of both channels to make sure they are tracking properly at different volumes. My 1280 with this power board (fantastic upgrade) measures nearly spot on 185w using this method. You mentioned yours output 240 watts at 1khz (7:30), assumingly in 8ohms. I have never seen an amp dish out significantly more power (25%+ in this case) as the sine wave usually flattens out at the peaks and does not increase, usually at the rated wattage. Can you explain the difference here with your test and why it was able to put 25% more power than its rated 185w?

Tony, I believe you have an inverse riaa filter somewhere in your kit (Hagerman?) If you run a sweep through that into your phono input you should end up with a flat response. So, that’s another way to test the riaa filter. This assumes the iriaa is accurate. I built a very accurate one for this purpose

Hi Tony. Long-time viewer of your channel and I have to say that this series was one of the best yet...thoroughly enjoyable and educational! I don't recall you having made a video regarding your Hakko de-soldering tool, but I might have missed it. I have a question regarding tip opening sizes. Do you tend to change out de-soldering tips while you are working on something like the Pioneer, or is there a "one size just works"? I need to buy some new tips for a Pace MBT-250 that I just picked up and they are $$$, so it would be nice if I could get away with only one size. Thanks!

Hola Tony, una pregunta a los Potenciómetros de Volumen, TREBLE, Bass le echaste primero CRC y después le echaste Dexit D5 o Deoxit F5.

Beautifull job Tony.Did you run IM destorion tests.? I know i'ts more complicated, but IMD effects the sound more than HD, and might be a better test of qualty.

The test should have been at 40, 1k, 18k, monitoring the output level and the thd at the same input level so that its flatness could be determined.
