I think the best thing about tje original DS is how they use the"Chosen One" trope. You are not the Chosen Undead because you are special in any way, but rather because of all the people you are the one who persevered. Dying over and over, fighting gods and demons and horrors from the Abyss, yet you moved on. Others gave up along the way, but you didn't, you kept going no matter the odds. And, depending on the ending, when called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice, you did it. Dark Souls is a love letter to perseverance and hard work.

You know, after watching this and reading Ale Palau Sanchez’s comment, I realize what Dark Souls’ story is...to me, at least. Your fate as the Chosen Undead is to succeed Gwyn, sure. But...is that fate existent? No, that’s not a fate, that’s an attempt to continue what Gwyn, a duty others have casted upon you. What is it that really drives us, to go on? It is everyone else. Everyone met in this beautiful journey. You go and ring the bells, not because you particularly care about the fate of the Undead, but because you want to commemorate that dying knight who took you out to the outside world. You don’t go and help Siegmeyer survive his attempt at helping you and tell Sieglinde her father’s locations for one Titanite Slab, it’s because you wish the best for those two good-natured outsiders who gave you some moments to laugh with them. You don’t give the Fair Lady humanities because it increases your covenant rank or anything, but because you want to fulfill Quelaag’s wish that you stopped from happening. You don’t save Solaire because you want him to help you with Gwyn, but because you know what’s best for him and don’t want this radiant soul to fade. You don’t continue Artoria’s legacy for some materialistic reward, but because you know that the noblest of Knights must complete his mission, through you. I could go on, yet I don’t have the knowledge to do so. Gwyn made an empire out of nothing, that’s why he wishes to Link the Fire, to preserve what he did and himself. You want to Link the Fire to preserve others. Now let’s take away all of this speech-nonsense, this was a really cool video that, as other have said time and again, encompasses everything Dark Souls makes us feel. I, sadly, couldn’t finish the game due to an error, but if I were to lay my hands on it again, I would do every bit of side quest, help everyone, not to reap the rewards in items or anything, but because I want to help those people in every way I can. And this video just...has all of that.

No joke.. this almost made me tear up. This was so beautiful as someone who's played this series since it's release.. *edit / After some thought I realize the reasons its so emotional is because you managed to capture the thoughts that were in the back of our head when we were too busy fighting enemies. For example when we first meet the Onion Knight and we don't really know whether he's friend or foe because everything in this world has bad intentions; we find out that he's just an innocent soul pondering a way forward, and ends up being the only one who helps us for no reason. Then he perishes and we all felt bad, but we were focused on leveling or getting better gear or beating the challenge. You brought forth that thought in the back of our heads 10 fold. Bravo. When you hear the hopelessness in his voice, then you cut to his triumphant roar as he comes to your aid, that shit is what hit me hard.

Ds3 really, the way everyone basically knows the position theyre in, they know time is coming to an end, qnd the voice actors man, they are sometimes so invested the lines are stuck in my head forever. The elegant use of antique english "ashen one, hearest thou my voice still?" The deep raggedy voices thqt give the characters a feeling of dread on their words... i think diqlogue and soundtrack are by far the most memorable things about dark souls Which is why i think ds2 is even more inferior. Well, the video is quite the opposite tone from a Dark Souls game. You can see this is a love letter and the creator put a lot of work into it, but that doesn't make it exempt of criticism. The soundtrack in the video is very emotional, probably trying to appeal the nostalgia in all of us, but the truth is Dark Souls is the other way around, and it's atmosphere is nothing but sadness, solitude and despair. Music only happens in boss battles and firelink. There's not a single moment of joy, happiness or hope in the entire saga. Can't help but find Dark Souls look generic in a fan video like this, but there's some camera angles that allowed me to see some places in a different way, which is really nice, because the first game's architecture is nothing but magistral.
@hohhoch36176 жыл бұрын
@@ZerosMy You're kidding right? There's not a single moment of joy, happiness, or hope? The game is filled with that stuff. Most of that is felt by the player as they overcome their trials and tribulations. Overcoming Lordran itself. As for hope in particular, that is absolutely everywhere. Solaire comes to Lordran in the hope of finding his own sun. Frampt continues to spurn on undead in the hope of finding a successor to Gwyn. Gwyn himself kindles the flame in the hope of staving of darkness. Quelaag works tirelessly in the hope of healing her sister. Quelaana asks you to kill her sisters in the hope of ending their suffering. The game is all about hope and never ever giving up. Because if you give up, you become truly lost (hollowed). This video showcases perfectly how despite how bleak everything is we MUST continue on. The dark, brutal, and desperate world Dark Souls is only serves to show just how strong the people you come across are. Either in mind, body, spirit, or all 3. It also shows how you should never give up. Never give up on hope, because eventually you WILL rise above the rest. Eventually, you WILL succeed.
@ZerosMy6 жыл бұрын
@@hohhoch3617 Nonsense. Your interpretation of the game is too simplistic. Everything in Dark Souls end up fucked. Frampt is a liar manipulator. The game is a gigantic metaphor of real life and how humans do anything to alter nature's in order to benefit and extend their own existence. We altered our enviroment to make it fit better our society and we are basically destroying everything on the way for artificial purposes, just like Gwyn does with the first flame that is, inevitable going to vanish sooner or later. What you call hope, is actually DESPERATION to perpetuate a selfish and artificial way of living, and the world shows the consecuences of not accepting that fate. Pretty much everything is hollow and broken beyong repair. The reason you can end up not linking the first flame and the start of the age of darkness is the actual "good" ending of the game after you speak with Kaathe and she tells you the truth about Gwyn, Frampt and what is happening. Solaire being the most naive character in the game chasing an impossible objective that he'll never accomplish as you can see in DS3. If you really think the true message of the game is as simplistic and generic as "never losing hope", "never give up", then, you didn't understand the game, at all. You basically have to endlessly kill other beings in order to keep your "sanity", which is as pesimistic and selfish as it gets. There's nothing left to save. Humans were hollow before the light, and that's the way they really are and the way they'll end up, not matter how much they refuse to. Gwyn and it's people destroyed and betrayed pretty much everything that was right before, the RIGHT thing to do, is letting the flame die once and for all. The very primordial serpetns that you claim to be promovers of "hope" are the ones that started the downfall in the first place by lying and corrupting Oolacile and it's people, awaking Manus and with him, the abyss. Izalith, one of the "good guys" tried to replicate the flame and ended up infesting all Lordran with abominations. Same applies to pretty much all the others. What you call "hope" and "never giving up" is nothing but a virtual representation of ignorance, selfishness and egocentrism, refusing to accept nature's way, just like we do. Dark Souls doesn't show you how to fight or having hope, it shows you how USELESS it is. You said it yourself, pretty much every NPC is relying on hope to accomplish what they desire, but NONE of them actually manage to do it. Yes, you'll end up fighting Gwyn and, if you so desire, kindle the first flame, again, but ¿why would you want to do that in the first place?.

This just shows how amazing the story is in Dark Souls. As the Chosen Undead, you have been tasked with linking the fire to restore a world filled with nothing but death and despair. And as you continue to journey, you continue to resist the despair. As you continue your journey, you learn of the fates of the heroes and other NPCs, and they are nothing but sadness and despair. This world is dying, and the only hope you have to save it is to link the fire. And once you do link the fire, Manus tells the undeniable truth. The world is dying, the fires will fade, and you have done NOTHING to stop it. Other games/stories that have such dark settings are usually accompanied by a thin ray of hope or light. And as you journey, that ray becomes larger and larger. But in Dark Souls, that ray doesn't exist. It never has. It never will. Even your journey, one that should symbolize the light and hope, is soon covered in the shadows of the abyss. FYI: Artorias part hits you like a dump truck filled to the brink with explosive feels.

And yet again a wonderful cinematic. Thank you for this awesome work. Even though the story they wanted to tell so far has ended, things like this make me want to keep exploring the world of Dark Souls. In this cinematic you made the journey aspect a bigger part than in the previous one with those slow paced moments with the character walking. But I feel that a lot is missing. I don't think it's your fault tho; the game being less linear than ds3 with the map completely open, with characters' storylines scattered and mixed, with much more "flavor dialogues" I would deem important to the story... I'm sure all this made this video a lot more difficult than it should and that you could not fit everything you wanted to XD One thing I'm missing for sure is this theme of descent into madness and/or hollowing most characters experience. You start your journey alone, meet all these people clinging to life and when you are ending your story all of them are already gone. This feeling for me is much more powerful in the first game than in the third one. But of course this is not my journey and I really love that a lot too :P

Thank you. I've tried to include as many quests as I could, but yes the nature of DS1's semi open world made it hard to cram in everything. I've chosen the ones that are closest to me :)

Watching this finally made me realize just how much our character had to go through, and how much it took to get to the end. If there was ever a word id use to describe not only the our undead, but the players as well, I can only think of thus; Determination. Fitting perhaps? Enough for the fire at least.

Might have been footage from remaster, but it's heavily edited and arguably looks better than the game actually looks. That's the point.
@ahamilaag1926 жыл бұрын
Knight Grimm Exactly, it's footage from the remaster, and it still looks better. Shows how much effort Bandai put into the remaster XD Seriously though you can tell how much effort he put into it when you it's better than the original

@Biyonzo Right because people dont run different set ups at all, no. Cause my Remastered looks pretty fucking close to this video.

Dark Souls doesn't have many happy endings and what's pretty amazing is that they all still feel really sad. Usually in games when everyone dies it starts to lose impact but in Dark Souls it's always really depressing.

I just got recomended this video, and the only thing I'm wondering is why I haven't know about it sooner. Seriously, you did a fantastic job there, you made me remind of my very first finished playthrought, five years ago. I remember all these time I've spend in Lordran, all these NPCs I've talked to and their stories and sacrifices. All the Bosses I've fought against in order to rekindle the Fire. You make me remember all the good moments I've had with this game, and the bad ones. And for all you've done, for all you've make me (and others too) feel, I've only one thing to say : Thank you ! PS : You didn't needed to say it in the credit, you work has been done with so much passion in it, it's overflowing. I see you did it for the two other games, I'll gladly watch them.
