XT500 first start after rebuild

I just aquired a 1979 XT500 3 weeks ago. It sat for 3 or 4 years in a chicken coop in west Texas. I am very happy to have it, starts on first or 2nd kick, even with minimal cleaning of tank and carb.

I have a 1977 TT500 and couldn’t start it ,I use to push it down a hill until someone told me the starting process now it starts first second kick, I love that bike just wish mine was street legal

I have a Suzuki -82 with only electric start, which sometimes does not work and you have to bump-start it. Will be fixing the electrics next season but think I get one of these aswell, much simpler, less stuff that can go wrong :P

Good job. I have a ‘79. I find it starts first kick from cold. If you stall it, it can be a bigger to start. When it’s warm it tends to start pretty well. Do you ride it?

Sounds lovely :D Got an 1976 XT500 and I am a complete novice when it comes to these singles. Is it normal for the engine to get hot when just idling? Thinking off getting an oil cooler but they are £250 :/
