XTC is one of the best bands of the '80s. "Skylarking" is probably their most accessible album but my favorite is "Mummer" which starts with a George Harrison type Indian influenced anti-war song called 'Beating of Hearts'. This song is more middle eastern. 2 other '80s bands worth checking out: Love and Rockets which came out of Bauhaus and The English Beat (just The Beat in the UK) which was ska influenced.

Great reaction and request. Mentioning Talking Heads, Danny Elfman (Oingo Boingo), psychedelic and world music was accurate. And I always connected them to indie/alternative and New Wave Pop. But I guess Andy wrote that he aspired to “gently experimental and psychedelic within the Pop format.” Influenced many and influenced by many, like the Kinks, Beatles, Stooges, New York Dolls, Ska and Dub music, Bowie, Captain Beefheart, even Buddy Holly and Elvis. Feel good and fun. Nailed it! 👍
@sylvanm42162 жыл бұрын
Danny Elfman has cited XTC as a major inspiration on the formation of Oingo Boingo. As for Talking Heads, they toured with XTC in the 70s and had a lot in common, in weirdo singing style, but also I think more fundamentally, in sharing a highly creative and melodic but rhythm-first approach to art-pop. There's a lot to recommend with XTC, a band that made a string of great, unique albums from the 1970s all the way through to the 2000s. The track that you just heard the first half-second of, leading out of the fade on "Garden", is their brilliant single "Mayor of Simpleton" and would be a fine choice. If you want to go back to the 70s and hear where they started, I would recommend "Statue of Liberty" from their first album, or "Complicated Game" from their third.

From top to bottom the best XTC, imo, would be Skylarking (1986) and Apple Venus (1999). Two of their very catchy, early 80s hits (for them) were Generals and Majors and Senses Working Overtime. Infectious, quirky and very English. They also were often “pagan” in feel and word i.e. Summer’s Cauldron/Grass, Season’s Cycle, Sacrificial Bonfire from Skylarking and River of Orchids, Greenman, Harvest Festival, Easter Theatre from Apple Venus. At their best, top tier stuff up there with anybody. Think Sgt. Peppers meets Pet Sounds, especially with Skylarking.

I suggest you start with "Skylarking", work your way forward, then go back. Their best body of work, in my opinion, is gonna be from 1984-present. Basicly The "Big Express" to "Wasp Star"... with "Skylarking", "Oranges and Lemons", and "Nonsuch" being their epitaph period, so to speak. "Skylarking" is literally one of the rare 5 star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ records from most major reviewers back in the day and it was produced by the great Todd Rundgren, "Todzilla" as XTC liked to call him. Enjoy!

Always loved this song. Fave line - “don’t hurt no one, unless they ask you to”. Sly little nod to BDSM. Don’t hear that too often in popular music. The style of this song kind of reminds me of a cross between ‘Discipline’ era King Crimson and early ‘80’s Bill Nelson (especially the vocal delivery). Wouldn’t be at all surprised if those were actual influences. If you want to check out a slightly different direction in the XTC catalogue, they had a groovy little side project back in the early ‘80’s called ‘The Dukes of Strstosfear’. Under that pseudonym they released a one off album called “It’s 25 O’Clock”. Very psychedelic/garage sounding and very fun.

@@ChipMatthews Yes, I also like The Big Express a lot but this one and Mummer are rarely mentioned and even often ignored or underrated in the XTC discography, maybe because those two follow the band's decision to stop gigs and the departure of iconic drummer Terry Chambers and also that they had illustrious predecessors as Drums And Wires, Black Sea and English Settlement as well as more recognized successors such as Skylarking and Oranges & Lemons, but it's unfair because The Big Express is excellent and Mummer, although perfectible in places, still deserves several listens.

Whatever XTC did (art-punk, new wave or psychedelic 80s pop like here), there was always something very smart and slightly leftfield about their songwriting. I tend to prefer their older, less poppy stuff the older I get, but this is actually nitpicking, because most of their output was great. For earlier xtc I recommend "Real by Reel", "This is Pop", "No Language in our Lungs" or "Jason and the Argonauts". For pastoral, Beatles influenced XTC try the twofer "Summer's Cauldron" + "Grass", which are the opening tracks to 'Skylarking' or 'I'd Like That' and 'Easter Theatre' off their orchestral album 'Apple Venus' (which is the most beautiful one they ever released).

Funny you compare them to Talking Heads. Andy Partridge, their leader, said in at least one interview he felt the band was classified -- a bit unfairly -- as a poor man's Talking Heads early in their career. Not as much into the 80s. Skylarking might be the best album for newbies, but also English Settlement, which might be the album that really defines them. My favorite XTC music is probably from their other band -- The Dukes of Stratosphear -- which a side project of neo psychedelic songs they did in the 80s. Typical of them, it's one (or two?) of the best albums of their day and as fresh now as it was then -- even if it the music was meant to be a fun parody of the British psych rock they grew up with. It outsold their "XTC" music at the time even though it was made very cheaply and on mostly period correct (late 60s) recording equipment. Just for fun they tried to pretend it was a recently uncovered album made by a long lost rock band everyone forgot about. Amazing stuff.

You could have rolled straight into the next two tracks on the album (The Mayor Of Simpleton and King For A Day) and they are both exceptional uplifting pop songs. While you're at it, you should also dive into the music of Bill Nelson (including his 70s band Be Bop Deluxe) referenced in another comment. That's an even more impressive audio journey.

Si les gusta el thrash metal tienen que escuchar temas como 'Scumbag in disguise', 'Prepare for attack', 'It is true', 'Killing tendencies'. Espero en algún momento le den una oportunidad, abrazo grande! 👍

I like it! Late '80s pop... . definitely inspired by David Byrne. Nick has a knack for seeing how a piece of music is similar to certain other bands. p.s.... if you haven't seen Uriah Heep yet, don't you think it's about time? :)

I think David and Andy arrived independently, concurrently, at their individual takes on rhythm, pop, and their peculiar, by some standards, vocal approaches/styles. Point well taken, nonetheless, about the parallels. Never considered it before, reminded now too of Ric Ocasek's hiccuppy delivery.

@Ronnie XTC had been making albums for 11 years by the time Oranges and Lemons was released in 1989. They weren't influenced by Talking Heads.

1. i almost had a conniption when you stopped the song at its climax. 2. not listening to mayor of simpleton afterwards oughta be a crime. 3. listening to xtc w/o paying attention to the lyrics should be a felony. 4. check out hyeronimus bosch’s painting by the same name. 5. my yearbook quote in 1990: “this is your life and you be what you want to be, this is your life and you try it all, this is your life and you be what you want to be, just don’t hurt nobody (‘less of course they ask you)”

I like your quote but it hasn't really stuck with you in adulthood. I am happy you're not in charge of the criminal justice system. We react to the music first and worry about lyrics later. Literally off camera that same day. That's what musicians do. We care about chords, time signatures, voicings, progressions etc. There are many channels that only react to lyrics. My quote is live and let live. If you can't say something nice ..you know the rest.

@@NicknLex that’s interesting. i just watched the marathon w the postal service song which you’d known for years. the lyrics are as devastating as xtc’s this world over but the imagery of silhouettes left by bodies disintegrated by a bomb or the thought of a body exploding elicited no reaction. if the bands didn’t think the lyrics were just as important as the music, they’d release instrumental albums. you have thin skin for someone on platform made to comment on and discuss. don’t worry, i won’t be wasting any more time on you.

Delightfully twisted just the way I like it. Wonderfully flowing sweep that's wide open to many different inclusions if they so desired.

Isn’t it pronounced like “ecstasy “? I’m asking fans….I’m not that familiar with them. But I thought it was like INXS is “in excess”.

Pronounced like the letters of the alphabet - X - T - C (though the band's name alludes to "ecstasy").
