Saw then on the Summer Slaughter tour in 09. Before their second song they played that clip from 300 that went "SPARTANS!!! WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?" Then the crowd chanted "HOOAH, HOOAH, HOOAH!!!", they started the song and the crowd when absolutely apeshit.

I was never a fan of Despised. But how I was so familiar with them is Ion Dissonance was one of my favorite bands. And they were super tight with Icon. Over the years now I've gone back and appreciated Icon. And I'll admit. I wish I could have appreciated them back in the day. Speaking of Ion. I wish they got the credit they deserved for being one of the first'ish bands to play 7 and 8 strings doing the djenty thing back in the 2000s.

Anyone remember this one band called Embrace The Ashes??? They had like two songs but the one called To The Day I Die or something like that was one of my all time favorite songs and I cannot find it anywhere 😭 dang MySpace lost media.

Great doc but i think that there's some point missing for the origin and the pedigree that came with the band. Alex Erian was the drummer for the Montreal prog/death/grind band Neuraxis which had a very good run in the late 1990's in Canada and USA, touring with Cephalic Carnage and other Hydro Grind bands. Anyway, back in 2002 i was 19 years old and i was if i recall correctly the first promoter to bring Despised Icon and Ion Dissonance out of Montreal and come playing in Rouyn-Noranda in northern Quebec, if you know anything about the metal scene in Quebec, every band from Quebec wanted to play here in that era. I was already friend with Yannick prior to get them to come play in our town, Yannick being from this area. "Ills of Modern Man" was recorded at Projecson Studio, between takes Alex and Steve would come lay some screams and growls on our jam and covers of Origin we played, was pretty cool and we would hang in the control room listening to some tracks and all that good stuff. Couple years later i built some guitar effect pedals for Eric that he brought on tour all over the world, dude made my day! I later acquired some of the gear Yannick used to record some of the albums, mainly the OD pedals used to track the guitars, Maxon OD820, which is still on my pedalboard as i'm typing this with the sharpie marks for the studio settings.... This might not mean much to most of y'all! But these guys have always been friend and have huge respect for them and what they accomplished! Yannick, Eric, Alex and Steve, if you happen to see this... Rock On! Cheers, Rej.

My first show I ever attended was DI headlining with Cryptopsy, Acacia Strain, Trapped Under Ice and Blind Witness. It was a small Canadian tour in 2009 when Day or Mourning was released a couple months before. Day of mourning will always hold a special place in my heart because that same year I used Les Temps changent for a project that had to be about a Canadian French artist. Surprisingly enough the teacher I had was really open minded and it was his first introduction to this style of music and actually showed interest on the Montreal metal scene and how DI pioneered an entire subgenre of Metal.

Man, i genuinely appreciate what you do for the deathcore scene. You seem to try to represent all the deathcore OG's, you keep content pretty consistent but interesting, and it just goes to show how amazing this genre is. And hell, it feels good to be vindicated from all the hate we endured 10-20 years ago😅 P.S. Yes i totally agree with the sentiment that part of what makes despised icon so good is the fact NO ONE sounds like them.

so glad they came back and started killing it again...the basic riffs and drums alone are masterpieces almost always in this band, let alone the bass, lyrics, songwriting, and samples. Saw them open a show back in 2005 and been a big fan ever since. Didn't even realize they were the OG deathcore band until like 2020 when I fully got into the genre. Back in my day the genre discussion wasn't really a thing, it was hardcore, metalcore, death metal, and some hybrids of the three. At least in the Norcal scene I came up in.

Despised Icon was the first deathcore band I found. Consumed By Your Poison and The Healing Process were absolute bangers and instant classics. "The Sunset Will Never Charm Us" was an assault on the senses. I was in several bands during the MySpace era, only one has anything online that is still floating around out there, but I had the opportunity to open for a lot of really cool bands like Suicide Silence, Walls of Jericho, A Life Once Lost, The Agony Scene, iwrestledabearonce, Knights of the Abyss, and many others, and one of the BEST live performances I ever saw was Despised Icon. Oh, and Necrophagist. And Beneath the Massacre. BtM were SO clean and nailed everything. Pure professionals.

Whoa, Malamor reference! For a while there they were the only extreme metal band in my old home town (which was mostly druggie rock kids, hardcore bands, and Coheed & Cambria....they used to be jerks, which I find hilarious). They were an awesome group of guys doing something no one had really heard before...which sadly earned them a severe case of pioneer syndrome. EDIT: Malamor were DEFINITELY doing their thing before '98 so they pre-date Antagony....I know this because I'd go see them live at any Legion Hall/Bar that'd let them play.

I got a cool story involving the members of Despised Icon and Whitechapel. I can't remember what year the tour was that had (Despised Icon, Whitechapel, Aborted, Kataklysm, Black Dahlia, and The Faceless.... but this story took place in San Antonio at the infamous White Rabbit club. My good friend Jamie apparently was friends with a few of the bands as she has worked promotion and merch for a few of them. During this stop in San Antonio my friend Jamie said " Hey!, You want to go with me? We'll go backstage too, and you can meet a lot of the bands you love so much". I was 100% down. the only stipulation was i had to be D.D. for her as she was going to get hammered. The night went off without a hitch. Getting to meet a bunch of people backstage was cool but the crazy shit happened after the show backstage. most people didn't know that "backstage' was just a locked parking lot behind the venue. anyways, once D.I. and Whitechapel finished their sets my friend hollered at me to go backstage with her. I got to meet the members of D.I. and Whitechapel and just chat/drink with those two bands specifically. We were hanging out beside their van and gear trailer, when out of nowhere we start to hear the members of another band (who I will not name) start cat calling my friend .it started off normal at first but after she refused to play along and ignored their call outs, they got more aggressive and derogatory with their comments. They start saying some highly disrespectful stuff and acting like my friend was just a groupie looking for D from anyone and they were gonna be the ones who give it her. Some quotes I specifically remember are "show us your T!ts, you whor3!". My friend was too drunk to really catch it and she easily ignored it but i was stone cold sober, and I couldn't just let my friend keep being disrespected like that. Eventually I yelled for them to stfu. Immediately after my comment they got hyper aggressive towards me and about 5 or 6 of them started walking up to me, which i took as them wanting to fight. I'm not afraid of a fight and definitely not afraid of being jumped. After all, being in those pits for years at that point had me desensitized to violence. The early years of JFAC and Through the Eyes Of The Dead shows were BRUTAL here in the south, as I'm sure they were everywhere. Violence was no biggie. I was ready. I walked up and met them face to face and started talking back in their faces about how they need to learn some class and leave my friend alone. They thought I was going to back down from them. They were wrong. I stood my ground and kept talking back and highly aware that a fight was about to happen and was ready for a sucker punch at any time. It never came though. After about a couple minutes the guys eventually backed off, shrugged me off and went back to their trailers to keep partying and stayed silent. I was weirded out by it. I wondered to myself "why they didn't swing?", then shrugged my shoulders and turned around to go back to my friends and that's when I realized what had happened. While i was arguing and being loud, a lot of the other bands' members heard the commotion and the members of many bands were actually standing behind me like I was their leader and we were reenacting the intro fight scene to "Gangs of New York" and they were clearly showing that if anything happened to me, it was going to be a big brawl and that they were heavily outnumbered by my backup. The guys from D.I. and Whitechapel were right up front directly behind me. Afterwards I got to meet many more members of the other bands. It was like they had some new-found respect for me and many of them came up and introduced themselves to me. Each of them thanked me for saying something and then told me why they stood up and took my side. It was an awesome experience in the end. They made me feel like the celebrity, and to know that even amongst some of the hardest bands in the world "chivalry" wasn't completely dead made me so incredibly happy by the time we left that show. I ended not being a good D.D. that night as many of the bands refused to allow me to not sit and drink with them. In the end, my friend Jamie sobered up and drove my drunk butt home. I'll never forget that night til the day I die. Another cool story was when I was working overnights at CVS Pharmacy in 2007-08, i was amd as hell that they didnt give me the night off to go to the Emmure show, so i wore my band shirt under my uniform to work. Just to show my love. late that same night around 3am this angry guy came stumbling in drunk and was yelling at his laughing friends about "how dare you shave my head while I was sleeping". He eventually calmed down and his friends kept laughing at him as they grabbed a bunch of snacks. then as they came up to pay, i recognised one of them. and asked "Do I know you? You look REALLY familiar but its late and i'm tired so I can't remember right now but I swear I recognize you from somewhere." The guy paying said "you may have heard of our band maybe? but other than that, we're not from here so there's no way" so I thought to myself for a second, and then shouted out like a little fangirl when it dawned on me. I missed the Emmure show that night in SA, but I was looking at the band standing in front of me at my work! I freaked out and was so happy. I immediately ripped off my work shirt to reveal their band shirt on underneath. They were shocked. I explained that I was having a bad night bc I really wanted to go to the show but work couldn't find a replacement for me. They were super cool dudes, they actually legit looked sad that "they had no merch they could just give me" as they were traveling separate from their gear that night bc they only had a short drive up to Austin. I told them "No worries, meeting yall like this is cool enough for me. Yall just accidentally made my whole night so much better". My manager for overnights at the time was standing close by as she did when anyone came in that late. When they were all done and ready to leave, she told me to "walk out with them" and talk for a few, but dont be long." Tthe guys were tired and in a hurry so we didnt chat much they all signed my shirt tho, and yes I absolutely stood in the parking lots with a huge smile, waving to them like Forrest Gump to Lt. Dan as they drove away! LOL My late teens and early 20's were the absolute coolest times of my life. Like getting to go on a personal tour of Dying Fetus' tour bus and chill out on it for a bit. Surreal life experiences that many would never believe or ever dream of. 2002-2012 were some of my most cherished years.

One of the examples of don't judge a Deathcore band by their get up. Sure, they appear like they're a hip hop group at first, but they sure delivered at how they sound. I first learned of them from a friend of mine and dig it at first, until I learned they are calling it quits back in to 2010. Glad they decide to keep going since 2016 when they released their 5th album "Beast".

Nice of you to mention Antagony. Those guys started out combining melodeath and hardcore punk, without the brutal death metal angle. Most European bands of the 00s seem to borrow equally from the DI and Antagony styles.
