Interestingly enough, as I type this, I have my Laserbox cutting pieces for a set of shelves to hold art surfaces. I think it might have been the last product sold under the "Makebox" brand before they transitioned to xTool. While there have been some learning hurdles, it's been quite useful in the year and a half I've had it. And indeed, I have made book nook cases, miniature furniture, and bookbinding tools(punch cradles and guides) with it, with even more in my planning list. Eventually I'll get to... about half of the list? Mainly because I keep adding to it. On a whim I bought a file for a 1:144 dollhouse, and in the process of assembling it, started playing with the idea of designing my own dollhouse (probably not in 1:144 scale) based off a house my family lived in when my father was stationed in England. So that's been added to the list... right after the day before's idea, and... Well, you get the picture. Still, I may be crazy, but I'm having fun.

I like this! Yet, I really like the raggedy jj's. I also have a tip for you! I've ended up only using 'stuff' in my home, nothing (new) purchased. I took apart a shoestring & the material was fantastic! Make a cut 1 cm below the aglet & kind of pull gently to separate the thing! The 'structure' section is intact, & the end result is a long, featherily spiral with short teeth! It's a total delight to see the remaining section which resembles a horse's mane! You'll be astonished! I just loved the ideas that sprang forth once I separated it. Go to town with it.

Interesting to see and a good review, but I know myself too well…. I’d spend ages learning it and trying a few random things and then it would probably just be gathering dust and guilt in the corner! I love your little book covers!

I’ve been wanting a laser machine for several years now, but you know, PRICE! Lol I have a Cricut and a silhouette machine and all the die cut machines imaginable! I will literally sell them all to by this machine! I’ve known for a couple years that I was definitely going to buy one but couldn’t decide between this one and the glow forge. Your video just literally made my decision for me! Thank you for your in-depth review of this machine…running now to get myself one for Christmas!

Congratulations on getting such a useful machine. It is too far beyond my current skills. Heck, I'm still trying to use double sided tape without getting it stuck to everything but what it's supposed to be stuck to. LOL I have plenty of tiings to learn about journal/book making without trying to figure out a machine. Back when I was doing programming (25 + years ago) I might have had the brain power to learn it but... I don't have the space in my home either. I'm trying to downsize also. So when you get comfortable enough with the machine, to put some items on Esty, I'll bring my charge card.

Very cute book, would love a tutorial. I have been thinking about getting a laser cutter/engraver. would also be good for hubby who wants to build and make little houses for model railways etc. Would also be good to make book nooks and doll house furniture and maybe components to build a doll house. Spoke to soon, you just mentioned the book nooks etc... LOL Thanks heaps, I found this very informative.

I have looked at every non-laser cutter to no avail for my needs. This however this looks really promising. I will have to do some research and look at reviews. I have always wanted a laser cutter. To have it engrave also is cool. I scratch-build all types of models. This coupled with a 3d printer would be the ticket for me. My wallet just needs to get a bit fatter LOL Thanks for sharing Nik...looking forward to seeing what you create with it! Cheers

Could one do emboss/deboss a material for a leather cover for books? Or do you need a CNC?
@NiktheBooksmith Жыл бұрын
Good question! I suppose it would depend on what material you wanted to use under the leather and what kind of debossing you were going for. A CNC can do rounded edges and a laser cuts straight down.

This sounds like a great machine for those who have space and can use it for projects both in a business and home. I have neither... But, it was fun to see what can be created with it and... I love, love, love the little book you made! I would love to see how you created this beauty, either now (not now now...) or later (for me, that is) on Patreon (yes, I'm soon becoming a member. 😊 ).

I’m interested in something to cut bookboard, because my skills with a knife blade are not the best. Have you tried cutting that sort of thing? What did you think?
@bkmuze9027 Жыл бұрын
I had the same question! Will be watching to see if someone knows.
@PhoenyxAshe Жыл бұрын
You should be able to cut bookboard, you'll just need to sacrifice a small amount to get the settings right for it. I found my calibration files on Thingiverse, but there are other places as well. Basically, it's a grid of squares with power settings on one edge and speed on the other. If the M1's software is like the LaserBox's, you might have to do some extra finagling, but once done, you run the cut and check which squares cut the best, and that is your setting for that material. I'm simplifying it a bit so I don't write a mini-novella, but that's the basics. xTool has a page for materials settings on their website, but it doesn't cover everything. Pick the closest material to your bookboard, and set your test range a little above and below those settings. It took a few passes for some of mine, but it's worth it for really clean cuts -- in the case of the M1, for both the laser and the cutting tool side. I've taken to do any matboard cutting I have on my CO2 laser, because while the Cricut Maker will cut it, it's very slow (multiple passes) and shreds any fine detail cuts. Kind of overkill, but worth it to me.

PheonyxAshe is spot on. This machine easily cuts book board, which I'm thankful for since my hands continue to weaken as the arthritis gets worse. I'll gladly let it do the heavy work!
