Your entire series on Inform7 is very helpful, especially to those just starting out (like me) who don't know where to start. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this!

Omg thank you so much ! I thought I was the only one who still used this thing :) I love it so much but I have almost no clue how too use the advanced parts. Gonna keep watching for more :)

MusicaMATTers Aha, yeah, I use it. I don't know too many advanced things, this tutorial is mainly for knowing how to create something. But in Episode 4(?) I give you a few ways to find out your answers!

Hey, glad to help! Some things may be outdated, but hopefully it's still useful! Also, you may be interested in watching my newest video, as I'm now working on a IF program of my own :)

Runescape and Heroes of the Storm on the taskbar? A man of culture. Would have been bonus points for Old School, but RS3 is acceptable as well. Also, thanks for the introduction to Inform 7! I know the video is 4 years old, but could have done with a few edits in places that you confused yourself and when you got a Facebook message, but the important thing is, I understood the information and it was explained clearly and well, so I'll let it slide ;) Liked the video, will definitely be watching the subsequent ones!

Hahahaha. I have far too many hours in RS3 to switch. Yeah - these videos I believe were one take. I never /really/ expected them to blow up. They were more to test the waters, so to speak. Hope you enjoy the rest! I recommend looking at my Twine ones too (not only cause it gets me more views and watchtime, but also I feel Twine is a better program in both functionality and ease of use.) Good luck, have fun!

@@Zoroarrkk Definitely worth the switch, but at the end of the day, it's your decision ;D Sorry if I seemed overly critical, I didn't really mean to be, the video helped and that was the important thing! I just googled "how to make text based adventure games", found the program, then searched up a tutorial and found your series... I'll have a look into Twine if you think that's a better program to use, I'm brand new to all this stuff and have absolutely no video game creation experience in any capacity... I just thought it'd be fun and (relatively) easy to make a text based one!

If you already know how to program, these DSLs make it harder to learn since have to map concepts to their "friendly" equivalents.

IF programs are more designed for writers to be fair - but I do agree. Twine and Inky are easier because they use very little coding (it's done via using symbols to activate code, rather than writing it itself).

Yeah frankly I'd rather write a command line text adventure in C than one of these super high level type languages, like even in this video there are quite a few confusing aspects. What exactly are "items" and "animals" and "people" in this context? What features do they have that differentiates them from one another? I assume they're premade classes but what exactly are their properties? Say for example you wanted to pick an object up, does picking up an "item" object work differently than for an "animal" one? Logically it would make sense for it to at least sometimes but without looking at the underlying details of their implementation it would be difficult to figure out what exactly those differences are unless you tried a bunch of random stuff to see what happens. Whereas if you coded it from scratch in an actual programming language you could easily make your own object classes and know exactly what they can and can't do and how to work with them to do exactly what you want. Not to mention you could add as much or as little interactivity to your game as you want by writing your own parser and interaction functions whereas with inform you're presumably stuck with that the premade parser and object classes have to offer and not much more....

I just 10 minutes ago downloaded Inform 9.2 and all the text is just too daunting and bulky to read. I started off with messing around in the skein tab but i still needed to know how to code in it. Thank you

I'm trying to make I7 NOT try to be smart, precisely if I have a room called "entrance to the Black Knight castle" and a person named "The Black Knight" it will confuse both and refuse to compile. I could use the "printed name" property as a workaround but that would still make for weird/unwanted reactions to some player commands. Is ther any way to enforce strict matching for specific names at compile time and/or when player commands are interpreted ?
@Longlivethe4th
@Longlivethe4th 2 жыл бұрын
@Michael Ward After my initial post, I realised you can also use the term "privately named" when naming a room, that prevents the parser from recognising it as the name of a thing if the player types it. It helped me to make something neater.

Perhaps it's worth remaking these with modern Inform 7? Seems to be outdated info and some constructs in your tutorials no longer work.
