Who told you that many people wanted Malaysian 阿豪 to be released? After he's sentenced to death, his father went around to many people on the streets to ask them to petition against his death penalty but they refused or ignored his father.

Similar to the Malaysian indian drug smuggling case, most of the petition are signed by their countrymen most likely to save the embarrassment for the sake of national reputation and morale. Though I was only a Singaporean primary school kid at the time, similar to what the above two commenters have said, I don't recall Singaporeans being on the side of the murderer. In fact, I distinctly remember my teachers and classmates being very relieved when the authorities apprehended him and doled out the maximum punishment possible to the murderous liar. Could a guy with an IQ of 76 conjure a lie good enough to fool not one, not two, but multiple police investigators, and then escape to Malaysia where he remained off the radar for more than a week before surrendering to the police? I certainly don't think so, and neither do the rest of us.
What do lawyers & doctors have to do with fame here? Before the Malaysian suspect was convicted & sentenced to death, he's assigned a lawyer for free by our country. For all cases with capital punishment, our country provides lawyers to defend the accused persons for free meaning that the lawyers don't receive legal fees.
