This is (personally) one of the rare moment that Xu Xin is being pushed to the 7th set by non-China player, where Xu Xin chole vigorously. Simon Gauzy are displaying a very well play style that as Xu Xin fan I even felt contented when Gauzy won the point. Both of them are extremely entertaining to watch, truly a quarterfinal match with a Final feeling. Too bad the camera quality doesn't live up to the quality of the game itself.

My two favorite players by far. Their style are unorthodox, based upon creativity and spin. The new generation is so good but the rallies are shortened (Harimoto for instance). Is it a new and organic trend or is it enabled by the plastic ball ?

2 quick tips for ITTF: 1. Buy new cameras. 2. The view from above is absolutely useless and is surely not worth the effort to set it up.

View from above is the worst angle possible. What else can ITTF do to make it worse? Frame speed is so poor, countless complaints here. Let us hear more from Adam, just a few more seconds after spectacular exchanges. He is the best commentator who really provides positive/convincing inputs on the game.

Fantastic match! Both Xu Xin and Simon Gauzy exhibit a style that is spectacular and magical to watch. Inside-out backhands, chop blocks, or very deep behind the table, these 2 certainly make excellent ambassadors for the sport.

Exactly. No wonder they are often in the top 10 of best points. To be fair Xu Xin is always in it. I wish Xu Xin would go on playing for years and he is only 29 even if it's considered old the chinese team standards. Plus, he never has been so good i reckon. In conclusion more Xu Xin vs Gauzy or even Koki Niwa ( my three favorite players).

This has to be the first time I see XX scream at every winning point in a match. This is match where XX literally play against himself. The stroke and style of Simon replicate that of XX, no wonder XX has a hard time defeating himself. Simon play like possessed Xuperman.

I think he is also doing it because Simon is doing the same, so he is trying to keep his head up instead of getting down because of Simon's cheering. I'm not sure but at 7:00 at 4-1 Xu Xin, it looks like Xu Xin is kind of annoyed and gesturing to Simon, "why are you cheering for a point like that?"

Gauzy has amazing touch and control of the spin style. Even xx had trouble with some of his heavy spins. Rare in today's game to have a player use an all wood blade. Even xu xin has changed to a carbon one.

Wow, awesome match. Normally always want the underdog (or non-Chinese player) to win in Europe - China battles but with these two I was conflicted. The potential negative knock-on effects on Xu Xin's career if he had lost this would have been much greater than the benefit to Simon Gauzy's if he had won. And seeing Xu Xin win Olympic singles is imho important for the sport.

@@uvsl1978 actually a lot better.. xu xin is comfortable almost against everyone except few chinese . but gauzy finds it difficult against many. gauzy reads xu's serve quite well and able to counter those top and side spin killer shots and can block it close to the table changing direction . And there were some great rallies won by gauzy. quite impressed the way he performed . just an outstanding match and both of them showing character .

I think xu xin and gauzy show the same skills that's why there are so fun to watch. Obviously xu xin is a better player. Simon at it's best is a pain in the a** for a lot of asian and chinese players, but he lacks regularity and perhaps a higher mental drive in the key points. He often lead 2:0 or 3:1 but he can't kill the match. Loosing or not, he's always a showman.👍

I really love the way Simon Gauzy's play with Xu Xin. He really plays aggressively and tries to be the dominant one. I think he handled the situation so good enough but at the end of the day he plays against Xu Xin and the experience speaks. Well done Gauzy! Love this match. Gauzy played the best I've seen. He attacked Xu Xin hard both on the backhand to try to pin him and also wide to the forehand. Under pressure, Xu's backhand started missing. But Xu seems to be so stable when it comes down to the tight points because he can sidespin everything. Gauzy went for point-enders and missed but he had to try.

Beating XX is the highlight of SG's career and I think he was pumped up to another level to meet XX again. The anguish and disappointment of failing his responsibility as the only Chinese in his half of the field eventually propelled XX to his Xuperman status following the loss to SG. However, the same situation and responsibility must weigh on him too this time. As Adam said, he had much more to lose than SG had to gain. This is a good outcome for XX but not bad at all for SG who must have gained so much respect and confidence from his performance at this match.

If Harimoto and other upcoming players have troubles with Xu Xin, they must watch how Simon Gauzy battled against Xu. Simon lost this match but he was playing brilliantly until the last few points. Simon lost not because of out of control or confused, he lost because of execution errors. Xu did what he needed to do and made fewer errors than Simon did.
