Again, very enjoyable compilation. Will female players start to appear here too as there are so many amazing ones? Thanks.

More penholders need to be encouraged, especially in Europe.
@benthekeeshond5457 жыл бұрын
Irfan, I have been wondering about that for a long time. Since the 1950s, pen holders dominated table tennis until the 2000s but only Korea, China, and Japan produce pen hold players. Why players from other countries never picked that up is beyond simple logic?
@Irfan877 жыл бұрын
I think its because of the trade off. Something similar in Tennis, Single Handed Backhand vs Double Handed Backhand. SHB were common during the early years of tennis right up to the mid 80s. But as the game started changing(just like in TT), there was a shift to DHB. It's easier to master, more solid and takes LESS time to be good at. It's a surer investment. The weakness of traditional penhold lies in the backhand. Lack of reach and ability to generate top spin. RPB changes that factor. If anything it actually gives an advantage to Penhold over Shakehand. But RPB is harder to master than a Shakehand BH. RPB allows for more variation etc. If you could create the perfect penholder vs the perfect shakehander. The penholder has a slight advantage. He has all ranges covered and unlike a SH player, he doesn't have a crossover point. Take Ma Lin and Xu Xin. In their primes, they were better than ANYONE by some distance. Bt the best penholders shine twice as bright as anyone, bt only last HALF as long. The most logically sound answer to your question simply is, SH is easier to master, it's as simple as that. A modern day penholder takes longer to train and if done well, is even better than the best shakehander, bt it takes a bit too long in a scenario where the establishments demand quick success.
@Irfan877 жыл бұрын
With that being said, i have faith. Lately Tennis has seen a resurgence of Single Backhanders and there's a very good chance, TT will follow suit with modern day penholders. People will realize it's part of what makes TT beautiful, the various styles.

Hey don't say that, I live in Donald Trump Land and I hold it J-Pen style with a J-Pen Paddle!

I agree completely. I feel like the only penholders in America at the moment. I think one of the reasons is people see guys like ma long and Jan ove play and decide to go with shakehand. Also, there aren't many choices of all wood blades for Penhold these days. All have carbon inside of them.

you're brave! penhold system is the most beautiful and powerful table tennis. since 1952 when Hiroji Satoh won the world championships until 2013 when Ryu Seung Min and Ma Lin retired, penholders ruled table tennis (except briefly in 1989 - 1994)

Good compilation as always. I dare say his RPB is more powerful than Wang Hao's, not sure about the spin though. Again it will be uphill battle against ever overpowered Chinese shakehands. Hope Xue keeps playing this way.

I got a cheapish penhold blade for fun and now could give someone a game playing this styled grip. Love way one can keep a good bat angle on forehand and boy can get great power. Also like flexibility for serves. Back hand is tricky though, but I've managed some rpb shots as well. As a twiddler I shall stick to normal shakehand grip it's what I use to.

@benthekeeshond5457 жыл бұрын
Syuukinn, Xue Fei is good and looks very menacing. Can he get to Wang Hao's level? We have to wait and see. Many young and promising prospects failed for various reasons. Being an athlete, it is a tough business. Table Tennis, Tennis, Badminton, or handballs are individual sports and only a handful of players can make it to the top. They require more than super skills and physical abilities. The final push will be a strong mental game. Ma Long is a very good example. Ma's overall skills were undeniably the best when he started competing at age 20. But it took many defeats for Ma to get to where he is now as a complete Table Tennis player. We also have to aware that many players failed and disappeared into oblivion.
@sebastianvettel43276 жыл бұрын
I think there is something different. Wang Hao's style had always been under development during his career. Xue Fei's style is even more advancing. I cannot tell who plays better, but I'm sure that Xue Fei's arm movement is "harder" than Wang. This can lead to greater power and thus, faster speed, but may need more time to recover for the next shot. Surely it won't be a problem if he can "kill" his oppo in one shot, like Ma Lin's famous unblockable forehand.

cdalag, Xu Xin was trained as a traditional pen holder. He is really good with his push block. His coach or coaches wanted to convert him to a Wang Hoa style. In my opinion, that ruined his game. His backhand is not even as good as Ma Lin.
@Irfan877 жыл бұрын
I don't think it ruined his game, i feel he didn't do enough with his RPB, he's inconsistent with it. There are times he's pulled of AMAZING shots with his RPB. But he just lacks consistency.
