Xiang Liu's love for Xiao Yao is truly amazing. If Xiao Yao knew everything, I'd bet she's gonna choose him. Xiang Liu is just very secretive of all the good things he does for her. To be honest among all the guys in Xiao Yao's life, it was Xiang Liu who sacrificed a lot for her. He was just showing his mean side or teasing Xiao Yao all the time to remind her that Xiang Liu shouldn't be in her dreams. When you read the book, you'll understand how grave his sacrifice is in loving Xiao Yao

Xiang liu knows xiao yao loves him and as altruistically as him. He retreated his hand because he sensed Jing's presence and to make her leave with Jing he deliberately acted in such a violent way. He laughed in dispair as he clearly understood that Xiao yao is in love with him, but clearly their relationship is doomed, and Xiao Yao understand that so she chose Jing over him. Well even if he's in love with her, the fact that he's toxic, control freak is undeniable. Also it's fact that whenever he saved Yao, he got very good deal from Cang Xuan and Jing. He personally has no feud with cang xuan but he tried to kill him multiple times for money (Xuan's uncles paid him to kill their nephew) even if xuan let that go, he didn't. Whether for money or Gen. Chengrong IDK. But i absolutely agreed with Xiao Yao's decision to be with Jing.

To be honest, it may look like him saving her looks like deals and transactional which XY also believes but no. It's an excuse. He will still saver her no matter what. Him agreeing with the "bug deal" is nothing but suicide deal for him. I would not call him toxic if you understand his character better but I guess you didn't. His responsibilities despite him despising doing them outweighs the "cry" , hope and people who relies on him. He bears the weight of those people and responsibility to feed and take care of them. I'm happy that she chose Jing and remained of oblivious in the end. Because she was devastated already when she heard his death how much more when she hears the whole truth that XL did for her. She'll probably die from crying and guilt.

Having responsibility doesn't give him power to abuse her at will... When he came to know that she's the princess, he could've terminated the bond. What's the point of spending time with her if he knew he couldn't be with her, and the act cruelly to push her to Jing..Xiao yao also loved him unconditionally, he knew that. and his pushing-pulling actions cause Xiao yao to feel more confused. He was duty bound , so why spend time with her as Bei? What was the purpose! He pulls her towards him the next moment, throws her like trash! It's not healthy romance, it's toxic. The some way as Edward and Bella in twilight. And most importantly, Xiang liu was persuaded into peace talk several times but he never negotiated! 2 kingdom's army against just a small group of soldiers.. he was determined to commit suicide... with or without Xiao yao.

Even XY can no longer get it out because XL meet the requirements of the bug plus he is the only soul willing meaning he accepted the bugs whole heartedly. Next, he is not push and pulling. He is madly in love with her that he looks like "Push and pull" but restraining himself so hard as well. It's like you want something but you know you are not allowed to have it. It's not abuse. He is trying to redirect XY to someone better not him at the same time he is also suffering. Next,XY is confused because she too is in denial for her feelings to XL for the longest time. She rejected him first saying he can't enter to her dream which appears to make XL feel unworthy or appropriate partner. He became Bei because he wanted to see her and that's the only way he can enter. Third, Being Bei help him taught her archery that later she shot him with arrows straight to his heart (which he never bothered healing) and accused him of killing Feng Long. In here he was really restraining himself so bad that he got angry an "are you worthy of saving me?" but deep down he knew she is right. He wished to live normally with her. He actually despise the things he does for the army yet he understand as well the reason why they are fighting for. T.T You have too understand that XL is a complex character that is not designed as plain black and white. Yet he has the most crystalized heart in the story.

Fenglong doesn't even count as her suitor. So it's Jing. What xiang liu is doing wrong is to give her hope by spending time together then shattering that. She asked him twice to be with her, and she will live everything behind as long as he does the same.. but he didn't agree then he purposely humiliated her by abducting her from marriage ceremony... no, this actions is not justified.

There's so much depth in XL's character that if you look just look into the surface you will not be able to get it. Being selfless is far being "Masochist". He is hurting because he loves her deeply but he can't abandoned those who people who relies on him. You have to understand that these people are soldiers who lost their homes loved ones. Unlike Jing that's just enclosed with family issues, XL has so much to lose and is not built to be selfish in the first place. He carries the weight of those buried bodies, the oath and vengeance of those people. XY asking him to drop everything is an idiotic hypocrisy as if she never seen those people in the camp. And XY craves his company tbh. Whenever XY gets hurt she goes to him like a glue. He grab her during her ceremony not to humiliate but to save her from making wrong choices that would lead to her unhappiness. Rather than seeing this as justification, it is an explanation and depth understanding of his character

At this point the actress is getting in my nerves. I’ve seen her before in Ashes of love but here she’s just ok. Sometimes overacting and the voice can be at times abrasive. I read somewhere a mention that she’s not a great beauty and I have to kind of agree. I think the makes leads were casted well and I can see them from the novel but with her it’s hard to imagine her as the female lead from the novel.
