Technically, on studio-grade headphones you'd be able to hear the bass frequencies better, so your ears would be filled with the bass when it cuts. Most pop or hip-hop tracks these days use extreme sidechaining (with a compressor or by simulating it with volume automation), usually for the kick, but I've seen they use it with vocals a lot as well. I do agree that he fucked up with the compressor there, probably pulled the thres and the ratio too low, so the kick is just cutting the entirety of the other instrument's intensity. It could've been intentional, though.
