The greatest game on the SNES full stop. One of the greatest RPGs of all time right up there with Dragon Quest 3 Phantasy Star 2 and Final Fantasy 6( 3 in N. America). Where to begin, battle system, plot, characters, design and the majestic sound track. Definitely a masterpiece of a game actually just a masterpiece of art. Will be remembered for a long time.

When I was a kid I would use a portable cassette recorder that I would place by the TV speaker to record the music to my favorite games. Chrono Trigger was no exception. This game's music has stuck with me ever since. Especially Frog's Theme and the Undersea Palace tracks.

Such a fantastic game. The soundtrack was the best. Frog's theme and Robo's! Love the time travel and the whole story. Magus is my favorite character but Frog is a godlike swordmage.

I didn't realize they had originally intended to leave Crono dead in the original story. I'm glad they didn't, as I would have stopped playing the game immediately after that happened. Chrono Trigger was huge part of my childhood, and I still play through it every few years just to keep it fresh in my heart. "To Far Away Times" made me cry like a baby, and I'm glad that the balloon ending was the first ending I ever got. It's also my phone's ringtone and has been for quite some time. This was a lovely video, thank you for taking the time to make it!

Wonderful video! Chrono Trigger might very well be my #1 video game of all-time (no pun intended). I just love everything about the game and the graphics, music, gameplay, and story are S-tier material. To this day, I find myself thinking about certain elements of this game's story and how thought-provoking it really is. Not sure what you opinion is of Chrono Cross but I love that game almost as much as Chrono Trigger (almost!)

Honestly, I just couldn’t get into Chrono Cross and I never finished it. I am willing to give it another chance though

@@Xygor I honestly understand! The music, story, and atmosphere of Chrono Cross are its strengths IMO so if you value those aspects of a game, I think you'll really enjoy it. The battle system is very unique as well and once you get the hang of it, it really cooks! :) CC definitely had way too many characters but there's an easy fix for that. Hone in on the characters you really like and just play the game with them. Don't bother to get every single character maxed out. It's not worth the time. It really is a special game though.

The original's pace is masterclass. There's never really a wasted moment, even in the side quests. All contributed to fleshing out the story that led to a VERY satisfying ending(s). DS version is cool and I appreciate that they tried to connect it to Cross but dang was it a lot of fetch quests. The extras in that version was a bit too extra.

I don’t care for turned based rpgs… I mean I’m old enough to have had to play some of them because well, they weren’t many fantasy options. For some reason though this and ff7 keep bringing me back. There that fucking good gameplay, characters, and especially story.

I couldnt find this game to purchase for the life of me when I was a kid. I had to keep renting it from Blockbuster and hope whoever got it didn't erase my save. The music blew me away. I liked it so much that I took my Talkboy (yes, the toy from Home Alone 2) and recorded all of the songs onto a cassette so I could listen to them after I returned the game. I eventually did find a copy of it and still own it to this day.

Just watched your Zelda video, now this one. Another top 10 game. I was in Jr high and played the crap out of this game. This game was way ahead of it time. Nothing will ever compare to the Japanese game developers. They made games for a thinking person. Today games are FP shooters, and just flash.

One wonders how the series would've turned out had CT been localized globally in its heyday. Square waited WAAAAAAAAAY too long to do a proper worldwide release. It wasn't until the DS port that it was brought over to the EU, AUS, NZ, etc. Essentially all PAL regions. By then, interest obviously wouldn't have been as strong due to gaming being generations ahead from the SNES era. Had they attempted to bring it over much earlier, one wonders if SE would be more confident in producing more sequels beyond Cross (which still has yet to see a PAL release to this day). This is the reason why I think the franchise has been lying in dormant despite the original's popularity among the RPG fandom. Game development has gotten more expensive and time consuming, so companies need to factor in how wide of an audience they'll be able to sell their titles to. Because the Chrono series wasn't released worldwide back then, SE's probably too hesitant to try and tackle one, as they don't know how successful another entry would turn out beyond the JPN and US markets. Xenogears met a similar problematic fate. It too wasn't localized globally, so Square turned down Takahashi's proposition to do a sequel, which resulted in him leaving the company soon afterwards. Imagine how different things would be if that game was also released globally all those years ago. :P

Yeah, I feel for everyone across the pond that didn't get it forever. Were you able to play via emulation before the DS?
@Sawngawkuh6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Could never finish it due to a block at a certain point in the game after the stone age sections. A time gate or something wouldn't appear where it should've. Pretty sure people figured how to fix it, but I had moved on by then and wound up completing it YEARS later when the DS version dropped. Bought that beast so fast. Curious how SE didn't quickly follow it up with a CC port (ESPECIALLY with the advent of the import section on PSN, which was ripe for these kinds of titles). Seems kinda awkward of them to include more connective elements to that title in DS CT's post-game yet not bring it over. Makes the narrative feel unfinished for PAL regioners, leaving them to question what the hell was up with that Dream Devourer and Magus losing his memory. :P

While, I don't always agree with a lot of the push in recent years for remakes and remasters, some older games really could use a well-done remake... And Chrono Trigger is absolutely not one. It is such a well crafted and tightly constructed game, it is perfect and timeless exactly as it is. I hope no one ever touches this game---other than to make ports.

I do not understand the theory behind the player seeing themselves as the main character just because they are silent and you can name them. It's stupid. I've never seen myself as the main character in any game. It just doesn't make any sense at all

People who say this game was a critically acclaimed hit and commercial success when it was released in 1995 obviously were not around then. The game was a dud and a flop sales wise from the day it was released and I know because I was around then and played video games and bought my SNES the day it was released in the U.S. There was a magazine back then put out by Nintendo called Nintendo Power. This magazine reviewed all the new games. Chrono Trigger was a Super Nintendo game and when it came out it wasn't even featured on the cover of Nintendo Power magazine. A game called Donkey Kong Country was on the cover. I bought Chrono Trigger the first day it was released at a Toys R Us store. There were only 3 people there before the store opened waiting to buy the game and I was one of them. For comparison when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the Super Nintendo came out there was a line 2 blocks long outside that same Toys R Us to buy that game. Almost nobody played RPG's in the early to mid 90's when those games came out for the Super Nintendo. I remember a guy who worked in the video game dept. of a Toys R Us telling me the games which sold the least were Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3 and Secret of Mana. I remember large stacks of those games in the original boxes behind the counter in the display case unsold. And no difference at the Captron World of Nintendo stores which were in malls and sold SNES games. The manager of the local Captron store told me that Chrono Trigger was the poorest selling Super Nintendo game ever. He said he hated when Nintendo released another RPG because he said almost no one bought games like Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire. He said the only game in that genre that ever sold any was Legend of Zelda Link To The Past and it was just an average seller and no big deal. I understand Chrono Trigger was a big hit in Japan for the Super Famicom but here the game was a dud and a flop and sold next to nothing. I know the game sold poorly because a few years later game stores had used SNES games for sale cheap and the used games were for sale as carts but Chrono Trigger was for sale sealed in original box which means there were a lot of unsold new sealed copies of that game out there. In 1996 after the SNES went out there were tons of sealed box Chrono Triggers for sale at used game stores for $5 or less and no one bought them. Also there was no merchandise for the game released in the U.S. when the game came out in 1995 . Which shows Nintendo did not care to promote the game here. No trading cards, shirts, posters, figures, nothing. The popular SNES games had various merchandise released along with the games. Chrono Trigger had nothing. So when these reviewers rave about this game and say it was a big deal and critically acclaimed hit when it came out they were not around in 1995 when the game came out . I was and the game was a very poor seller and was not the big deal these people say it was. It was a dud and a big flop in sales.

I don't think you know what "critically acclaimed" means. (It has nothing to do with sales numbers.) Also, as someone who was around in the 90's, many, many, many people were playing and buying RPGs back then. I don't know why you're trying to make it sound like these games failed, when they were in fact huge successes. Yes, most of the sales were in Japan, but the fact that they sold well enough in America paved the way for bigger games coming to America faster. (ever hear of FF7, or do you also think that game failed?)

How do you get Super Gato to appear at the Millenial Fair so you can fight him and get that fantastic item for defeating him? At the fair you fight Luccs's robot Gato for silver points. After you defeat him he gives you 15 silver points and asks you "Now wasn't that fun?" There is supposed to be a way to get him to follow that with a yes or no answer. If you answer no then Gato replies then you can fight my big brother and another robot comes out of the tent in the upper right hand corner. This Super Gato has a ton of hit points and you don't have the ability to beat him at this point in the game. But he says beat me and I will give you the warp ring. This ring allows you to warp to different areas of the game and access a secret area not in the usual game. To get Gato to give you the yes or no answer after you defeat him you have to speak to the guy just before you come into his area, the guy who mentions you can fight Lucca's robot for silver points, speak to him 16 times then go to the guy who exchanges 50 gold for 10 silver points and do that exchange 16 times. So make sure you have the max 200 silver points because after you do the silver exchange 16 times you have 40 silver points left. Take the 40 silver points and go to tent of horrors and bet your 40 silver points on the mimicking game. You have to do it perfect then instead of getting a clone for a reward the guy says fight Gato. Go back and fight Gato and when you defeat him he gives you the yes or no selection after he asks you if you had fun. I have done all this but Gato gives you no yes or no answer. All this was in a Japanese Video game magazine when Chrono Trigger was released there. Maybe it only works on the Super Famicom version. But the magazine mentions there is a time limit on doing all this. and maybe I have not been able to do it all fast enough. Then there is the problem of beating Super Gato. If it is impossible because of the low level you are at in that point of the game then use PAR code to go up enough levels so you can beat Super Gato.

Highly overrated game. You've got to be wired like an under 11 and still stuck in the beginner RPG realm to think this is anything other than a nice entry-level game.
