There are trees that grow in Arizona! There are even huge forests of Ponderosa Pine in the mountains... but since you require the mailed pieces to be kiln dried, that would require a sawmill and there are very few of those. I could send you either Palo Verde (state tree) or Cottonwood, which grow in my front and back yard respectively, but since I would be cutting it down, it couldn't be kiln dried...

For big states like Texas, CA and Alaska, you might consider joining two pieces of wood. Example-CA could be a piece of redwood from the north dovetailed to a piece of oak from the south.

I could probably find a piece of madrone to send. Redwood is the obvious choice for California but we have a lot of madrone, too, near the coast, and it looks nice. (Arbutus menziesii). Redwood is a very low density and soft wood, but madrone is pretty hard.

This is such a cool project, and I liked the mix between Vlog and build video (I guess it was mostly Vlog) and learning about some of the trees. I hope you're aware that once this is finished you'll have to step it up and do a giant globe with wood from every country!
@sebastianjost

That would be amazing! Though I imagine a globe would be very difficult to make as all the pieces need to be curved. Also it would be quite difficult to make some of the tiny European countries.

I can so relate to the head in the clouds view thing. I once walked 11km straight up a mountain in NSW, Australia based on a promise of a view all the way to the coast, acquiring nearly 30 leeches in the process, only to have visibility of around 20 metres when I reached the summit. Totally worth it still.

I didn't make the top of Mount Fuji when I tried climbing it. The folks on the trip with me who did make it to the top reported they were in the cloud. I stopped about 1000 feet below the summit. You could see down and out to the side a bit, but the cloud away from the mountain was below the level I was at.

Just a little planing tip. If you have to plane another thin jointed piece again, use painters tape oriented across the joint to help hold the joint together and reduce the chance of blowing the joint. If the joint does still blow, the pieces will still be held in orientation.

Very cool Xyla! Been waiting for this! Came out super! So once Covid is over and travel is possible any plans for a world map? 😄 One tip for planing thinner and smaller pieces of wood is to build a planer sled. Basically a piece of thick MDF and a tiny ledge at the back to act as a backstop, and feed all of it with your wood to be planed on top. This helps so the piece that you're planing doesn't bend (and shatter) from the rollers in the planer.

Note that you can glue piece of wood that are less than 1/4" in thickness. Luthiers do it all the time. It requires special technique and/or a jig. There are several examples on KZbin.
@a0flj0

If you ever find yourself in a cloud again, climb higher. You'll get your view. You can avoid snipe caused by the thickness planer by planning multiple pieces in parallel, but introducing them into the machine staggered. You should use two scrap pieces for start and finish of the stream of boards.Those will be the only ones with significant snipe.

This was fun! Good work and neat project. Be careful with the firewood though. Since it isn't kiln dried its possible for you to transport invasive species of bugs with it. A quick way to do it safely is to find yourself an oven and an old baking tray. Just bake the wood for a while and that should kill anything in it. Looking forward to the next road trip.

That was a very typical piece of mesquite. Here in Texas, furniture pieces made from it almost always have extensive epoxy infills. When planing small pieces like that, I rip longer pieces from scrap and glue them to the sides- this takes all the worry out of the job, and you can just rip them off when done. I keep crappy wood around for just this purpose (it simply has to exist).

The large wildfires usually rage in areas where there are native trees. But there have been some horrific fires in California in more suburban areas with lots of eucalyptus. The oakland hills fire, for example. I grew up in California, and, oddly, when I visited Australia the eucalyptus trees made me feel at home.
@mckenziekeith7434
@mckenziekeith7434 3 жыл бұрын
@EZ Z I just mean that in the wild areas, such as where a lot of the recent big fires have been, there aren't that many eucalyptus trees. But Eucalyptus trees are definitely a huge fire hazard. All that bark they shed is just kindling, and they burn very hot when they burn. I agree with all that. California has not done a good job of fuel reduction over the last, well, many decades. So it is a problem. Even without eucalyptus it would be a problem. But the areas with eucalyptus are definitely more at risk.

Tip for planing thin wood planks - fix them to another piece to increase thickness. Double sided tape, or make your own double-side tape by using two strips of tape (one on each plank) and glue the opposing strips of tape together using super glue. (i.e. the tape's normal glue goes to the wood, and the non-sticky sides of the tape are then glued together using super glue). Several videos on KZbin about this trick.

That piece of petrified wood is absolutely stunning. I do think the wood for California in this video may be prettier than the Redwood, but I totally understand the ideal of not promoting invasive species and, well, you can't think of California's trees without mentioning their Redwoods, so it makes sense to swap that one out. It might also be cool to just have a little bin of extra states where you received multiple submissions so you can occasionally swap them out and admire a fresh new look.

I love Tennesse for their nature. The opposite side of that trail leads to one of the best swimming holes in the country in my opinion.

Great violin background music . You did your uncle's song justice :) and it sounded great in that area. Mesquite is also very natural in Oklahoma as well. on the border of OK and TX off of I-40 that is.

Regarding the chestnut, there IS new chestnut and there IS a source for the wood. It's kind of a flash thing when it comes in stock, but I know CR Mutterspaw had some (gone now). I think their source was in Michigan. Hope the trip was pleasant. I headed back east back in Aug after being in WA. I'm glad I was heading east, not west. Around Utah/Idaho/Wyoming... Oof... The landscape screws with your mind.

@xylafoxlin if anyone else said this already then ignore this. I have the same planer. If you install a spiral helical cutterhead on it, the sound will drop a couple orders of magnitude. Also it will be able to plane figured wood.

Tried to find a good mn one, but we don’t have many MN specific trees. Thinking maybe a Tamarack. I have a couple different kinds of maple and some black ash in my yard, some of which could work since it’s already recently on the ground. Otherwise, lots of white and red pine or birch and aspen around here.

this was a amazing video. you are quickly becoming a carpenter. Persimmon was used when woods were wood (lol) but they made the best wooden club heads. one last thing your canoe you built with your uncle is just beautiful not sure you could get a nicer one.

I am not surprised you did not find local lumber in Amarillo. It is to bad you did not dip down into the DFW area where you could have found some pecan wood (the Texas state tree).

You should build a kayak like i did. Building a canoe or a kayak is a bit addictive, once you build one you see different things that you could do and can't wait to start making another one. I'm a woodworker and I live in Western Md. 5 minutes from PA and 5 minutes from WVA so I'm going the send you some wood from all three states. Walnut from MD, Red Oak from PA and Pine from WVA. Love the videos.

As a Californian, one of my favorite trips was to make it out to Chicago, and thanks to my company and my VP, our team jumped on a segway tourist group, rode from downtown, across Route 66, and to Soldier field. Being Californian, of course I'd already been to the other end of it, where Route 66 ends in Santa Monica... and on the Santa Monica Pier. If you're a car guy, Route 66 is a thing.

I really wish I would have seen this video when it came out. I would have sent you some Texas Native Pecan, Live Oak, or Southern Red Cedar. All grow native in central Texas. In East Texas we have large pines and beautiful Cypress. Your map came our awesome and these are the reasons why I love watching your channel.

First, let me say, as a KZbinr...you are amazing. I truly enjoy your scientific and wood-working projects because they are filled with enthusiasm and excited which makes me smile. My single request for you is to research the pronunciation of 'persimmon'. It's more like 'per-sim-muhn'. Keep up the good work.

If it wasn't winter, I'd go out in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon and salvage some fallen Golden Chinquapin. It is one of Oregon's most underrated and beautiful trees and is found on both sides of the Cascades unlike many of the other trees in Oregon.
