Stretch the wood edge that appears at the end of the wood member and wrap it around the surface of the orthogonal member.
To keep the stretched pieces together, a fan-shaped tenon is passed through the tenon and tightened.
This type of joint is unique to Japan, although members are often cut at 45 degrees.

Very impressive. I did not see the outside bevel rebate until you cut it. I thought this was a simple shaped mortice and tenon. Very good.
