A fact, that no one asked about: The Soviet Union also sold its own version of this game. Most likely, it was a much cheaper copy of the foreign original. Everything was simpler - there were no coastal structures here, the ships were placed in stationary slots and they could not be moved - they were shot down with one blow, but they were much smaller. And the guns fired only single balls.

That could be fixed by having four legs that it stands on, each of which can be twisted to adjust their height independently. Then add a little level indicator. The legs could essentially be plastic or metal bolts that thread entirely through the board with twisting knobs to adjust their height without needing to lift the board. Alternatively, if it fires the balls with sufficient momentum, a small incline could be negated. It'd be tricky to do, but it would be interesting if there was a built-in mechanism that slowly tilted the "water" from side to side, requiring players to adjust their aim to compensate.

Oh man. This brings back memories. My grandparents had a version of this boardgame. Didn`t have the mechanism to shift the ships back and forth, but was played the same way.
