In 2018, I'd took the first class express train from Cairo Ramses Railway Station (amazingly beautiful) to Alexandria. My favorite drink in the street was freshly squeezed sugar cane juice. The juice store lady did not speak English but she took EGP$15, less than USD$1, very local cost and did not cheap the tourists like Cairo would. I sat by the beach bank with the locals, lots families, and young people. Very friendly people, lots locals waved at me and said salam/hi/hello and wanted to get into my selfies. I would love to go back again to spend a few more days.
You need to have a good stomach to be trying out local food out there in Egypt!! I ate only in the hotels, had upset stomach for the entire trip and still bad after I got home. Be careful of salads ( almost everything fresh are salads) and fresh cut fruits, particularly in the local places. Just part of travel in many places...... Happy and safe travels!!
