都不一定.我兒女在五歲和六歲來美,女孩仍能寫漂亮中文字.男孩能講不能寫,但他們都能說中(香港話)英.西,韓.日,入滕校.但全都嫁娶歐裔青年,很好! I am bilingual-speaking chinese and English. I take this advantage and am able to take care of English or chinese speaking clients. Same as bilingual with Spanish and English professionals, we won't lose our job and have a great opportunity.

Thank you Mr. To for years of infotainment. We will miss 光明頂. Enjoy your rest.
My son was born in Canada. He picked up Cantonese first even though he attended local child care when he was 2. He learned English and French after. He can speak and write English and French but he can't read Chinese. He picks up Catonese is because the whole family speaks cantonese and our relationship is much closer when we can speak the same language. There is advantage to learn second language but it is not necessarily have to be Chinese. I heard some kids that actually hate being Chinese because their parents forced them to learn.
We live in California and my son was born here. He speaks English ( mother tongue), fluent French and broken Chinese ( he cant write Chinese ) and I think its absolutely ok. I can understand his Cantonese so thats all it matters.
I absolutely agree with 陶生. No need to force next generation to learn Chinese. I can’t even read and write Chinese properly myself after living in the UK for 28 years.

Agree, but at least you need to learn how to speak, is good for you anyway to learn multi language
