Indus Valley Civilization প্রায় ১০ লাখ বর্গ কিলোমিটার জায়গা জুড়ে বিস্তৃত ছিল এবং জনসংখ্যার দিক দিয়ে তৎকালীন সময়ের বাকি সভ্যতার চেয়ে এগিয়ে ছিল। এর জনসংখ্যা ছিল প্রায় ৫০ লাখ। ধারনা করা হয় দ্রাবিড় জনগোষ্ঠী এই সভ্যতার কারিগর। প্রাগৈতিহাসিক এই সভ্যতার কেন্দ্রস্থল ছিল প্রাচীন ভারতবর্ষের পশ্চিমাঞ্চলের সিন্ধু অববাহিকায়, পরবর্তীতে তা ছড়িয়ে পড়ে ঘাগড়া-হাঁকরা নদীর উপত্যকায়। বর্তমানে এই নদী প্রায় শুকিয়ে গেছে। তবে ধারনা করা হয় এটি একটি শক্তিশালী নদী ছিল এবং হিন্দু পুরাণে বর্ণিত প্রাচীন সরস্বতী নদী ছিলো এটাই।
