One of the key events in Bakumatsu history. The bodyguards made an horrible mistake. Tie the swords in order to cover them from the cold. Slow response made Naosuke Li an easy prey.

Historically, the raid was successful because many of the attendants fled in surprise when the attack occurred. This is because it was an era in which face-saving was important, so it was stipulated that the shogunate's chief retainers should be accompanied by a certain number of attendants when they went to the castle. In many cases, all but a few were employed as extras to cut costs. So the vassals of Naoya Ii were only a part. It seems that the vassals fought bravely, but it was unreasonable to expect them to work until the extras.
