Y-wing (XY Wing) - an Advanced Sudoku technique

For people who don't know why there needs to be a 4 in one of the people pincers: the pivot cell is either a 3 or 8. Either of those options will remove a non-4 note in one of the pincers, guaranteeing that said pincer is a 4. And if any of the pincers is a 4, the cell in the 6th column and 9th row cannot be a 4 as well, since its either in the same row or same column as any of the pincers. Hope this helps. Dont know if i explained it well.

In row 8, there are two cells with a 4-5 pair. Why in the world is 4 not immediately removed from all cells in row 8, including the pincer cell?

ive solved hundreds++ of "evil" sudokus on websudoku i do it all in my head i dont use notes and ive never heard tell of this "technique" before it didnt make much sense to me, notes kind of doesnt make sense to me

it is because that unique cell is connected with both pincers at the same time, while the other cells that you mention are related just with one pincer. So their existence is possible, but if you have a 4 in that bottom cell, you can not write a 4 in neither of the pincers, so it’s not coherent, so you need to delete it! :)

Actually they have their app and they recently started teaching (just providing) with new techniques everyday. I have been using the app consistently from around feb (148 days streak). But the way they try to teach is veryyyyy complex and they must provide simplified logic with it.

You arbitrarily established that the common number in the pincers means that this number must be done away with in one of the pincers, leaving it to finally appear in the other pincer. Having laid down this condition, from the fourth cell in the sixth column cell (in row 9)) you removed the note (4) that is common in both pincers. You removed this note from the fourth cell because you assumed that the number common in the pincers can appear finally in only one of them. How do you know? I left the number 4 to appear in both pincers but didn't end up with an irreconcilable digit in the pivot. I gave a 4 to appear finally in each of the pincers and was left with 3 and 8 in the pivot, neither of which clashes with the 4 in each of the pincers. You based your solution on the assumption that in the pincers the common note 4 can finally appear in only one of the pincers. How do you prove that the common note 4 can finally appear in only one of the pincers? Prove that, and your solution is OK. I'm not saying that your solution isn't OK, it seems you made an assumption about the pincers which you guessed correctly.

The note in 6th column, 9th row is removed because the common note 4 must appear in AT LEAST one of the pincers. If it is in one or both, then it it's impossible for the cell in 6th column 9th row to be a 4.

I kind of understand, but "y" wouldnt you eliminate the 4 from the top right on instead of the bottom right one? i mean one is 4 and 8 and the other is 4 and 5

This is an invalid sudoku anyway, you can obviously input an 8 in block 1, row 2, and thus you can enter a 3 in the pivot, and then you have a 4 coming in two spots in the block 7 (lower left)...

I understand the Y wing trick but have found it only works sometimes. Has anyone else found this? I’m trying to see if I am doing something wrong. I’m currently doing an expert sudoku atm, but if I use the Y wing technique to eliminate the common number (9) in a cell that sees both pincers (and I check in the back of the book for the solution), then I would have totally messed up my game because the solution in the back of the book says the cell is a 9! So I can’t understand why the Y wing technique is suggesting that I should have eliminated the 9 😅. Anything I should be double checking or has anyone else come across this issue to?

In the block where you located the pivot there is already a cell with the lonely note "8" which informs us that the only value the pivot can have is "3" and this affects the lower pincer that remains with only "4" as possible value... If all this is right than the two cells surrounding the "8" in the lowest row should contain both the value "5" which is impossible
