At this particular event, at this point in time this was such an awe inspiring event and Vinnies drumming floored all of us. Also, keep in mind the context here. All the drummers who participated has admitted that they were extremely nervous. They were called upon to play in the honor of Buddy Rich two years after his death WITH his band! Players evolve and change through the course of 25 years. Check out Vinnie´s awsome big band playing in recent years and of course his legendary playing with Sting.

You negative guys should stop writing comments and start practicing. Enter the woodshed and study. Play MUSIC. Don't get focused on "extreme drumming". Every pro I talk to confirms that Mr. Colaiuta seem to come from beyond this world. He is outstanding. To play drums means to play from within your deepest soul, with ultimate attitude coming with each stroke you do, may them be the softest or loudest you ever played. And your groove has to be played to reach the hearts of people listen to it.

Don't forget this was a "drum show" ... the main character here is the drummer, so in that context Vinnie played it perfectly! The whole band was great as well btw ... and this was 27 years ago ... most of the drummers that played the show are still performing .. and being as good as they were (if not better) !!!

I've just been reminded how truly GREAT Buddy Rich was. Vinny has some chops no doubt and I love this guy's playing but when it came to big band drumming...Buddy has no equal. At least to me. He could kick the hebby gebbies out of a band. He was very musical with great chops. He new where to put it all if you know what I mean. No disrespect to the great Mr. C here. He did very well on this.

they are triplets played on the snare drum: ride cymbal beats 1 2 3 4, snare drum fills in the triplets with his left hand on the snare drum, like this: 1tt2tt3tt4tt, where beats 1 2 3 4 are the ride cymbal, and the "tt" after beats 1 thru four are what make the ride cymbal and snare drum 8th note triplets or some people count 1-tri-plet 2-tri-plet... etc where 1 is the ride and tri-plet are the snare drum = continuous 8th note triplets between the ride cymbal and snare drum sweet!

WTF, i have the chart for this tune, how does vinnie do that shit. He sees time as three or four dimensional. The little glance down at the chart near the end is just taking the piss as he then rips those next figures with great accuracy. What a legend, what a god damn genius!!

Interesting to read all the armchair quarterbacks taking pot shots at Vinnie in the comments. like it makes you a better drummer by dissing him or Tommy aldridge does this better or Neil Peart does that better. Grow up. Look and listen and learn. If you asked Tommy A (who I have always dug) or Neil P (Who i respect) Neither would have a bad word to say about this performance. As an aside. Neil Peart did one of these and it went really badly. Big band jazz is not his thing at all but he came and laid his thing out for everyone to see. Props for knowing he was going into the lion's den and going for it.
