We're sorry you feel that way! Of course we know where it originated. All of us have studied raqs sharqi for 10 years or more. It is very important to us to understand the culture and the music. We always look up the song, lyrics, etc before we perform a dance as well. This performance is a modern street fusion, as we clearly state in the title, and it is appropriately danced to modern street fusion (partly French!) hip hop music. This music is not intended for raqs sharqi and thus we do not dance raqs sharqi to it. It is also an international fusion - as stated, one of the main artists of the song is Congolese-French, and actually, the bellydancers in the official Ya Habibi video are also foreigners. Foreign bellydancers in Egypt are and always have been common...even some of the dancers in the Golden Era of belly dance were foreign (like Greek dancer Katy Fotsati). So we feel that given the context of this music and the videos the artists themselves have made, this is okay. We certainly do not want to appropriate the beautiful art form from the Middle East, but we do love it and want to perform and pay respect. Just as ballet dancers all around the world perform this originally-Italian (and then French) dance form. And we will always eagerly listen to the opinions of those who are from the culture and have a stronger connection to it than we do, so we thank you for sharing. Well first of all learn where the fuck belly dancing actually originted. It originated amongst the gypsies. Gypsies are still known as the queens and kings of belley dancing. And no it didn't originate in the middle east! Arabs are muslim and belly dancing in Islam is Haram. Maybe you should learn some a few things before you come here and accuse them of appropriation.
