About the series:
As an extension of the World Music Heritage Series conceived and produced by maestro Bhai Baldeep Singh for Anād Records, the YaarAnād Virtual Baithak Series aims to celebrate excellence in the field of music, arts, dance, theatre, and literature. The YaarAnād Virtual Baithak Series marks the 550th birth anniversary of Gurū Nānak Dēv, the first gurū of the Sikhs.

Ustād Baljit Singh is an exponent of Gurbānī Saṅgīta known for his proficiency on the Tārśehnāī and vocals. Under Baba Jagjit Singh’s guidance, he started learning music under thumrī exponent Ustad Mahinder Singh of Amritsar. He studied dilrubā and Tārśehnāī under Ustad Piara Singh of Delhi, also studying Vicitra Vīṇā under Pandit Goal Krishna, Śehnāī under Ustad Bismillah Khan, and Sitār under Ustad Vilayat Khan. His training spans numerous genres and compositional forms: Dhrūpad, Dhamār, Khayāl, Paṛtāla, Guldastā, Caturaṅg, Thumri, Tarānā, and non-integer Tālas. In 1983, he came first in a national music competition held by All India Radio. Bhai Baljit Singh has performed on many of India’s most important stages and toured in North America, East Asia, and Africa. He established Guru Sangeet Academy in New Delhi to teach Kīrtana and its instrumental accompaniment in rāgic and contemporary forms. The Department of Punjabi Language at Punjabi University, Patiala awarded him the Shiromani Rāgī Award, and the Government of Delhi’s Punjabi Academy has awarded him the Shiromani Rāgī Award.
