I think a big part of this movie's message that goes unappreciated, is that it comments on how much damage being "afraid" of ageing can do you. You gotta honor your growth while respecting your inner child & vise versa. Elizabeth hates herself, so she hates Sue, and Sue hates what she is bound to become. It's a genius movie once you really dissect it

A friend of mine who was addicted to drugs many years ago and later got clean was unnerved by this movie. She told me that the way Elizabeth and Sue act are exactly how she felt back then. I had seen the movie, and it didn't even click with me, so I watched it again and saw it. For all of the body horror and gratuitous scenes that I watched the movie for originally for, the movie has some good storytelling too.

This, a lot is lost in “why don’t they just get along” when a huge part of it is that Elizabeth hates what aging is doing to her but can’t stand Sue’s irresponsibility and immaturity, she’s doomed to be unhappy because she resents yet yearns for the freedom and carefree nature of youth. Sue is presented as the obvious “problem” of the relationship but she’s literally just a manifestation of Elizabeth’s own lack of self worth and insecurity over her age, Sue only does what she did because it’s what Elizabeth would do to herself for personal gain.

I also like that this movie doesn't leave Elisabeth out of culpability. She made all the choices she did, even when she had healthy paths to follow. The whole film is an allegory of the self-hate that happens and turns one into a monster in the futile quest for perfection and youth.

Sheera perfectly encapsulated the lead character in The Substance with one biting line: "The dumbest woman I have ever seen." Honestly, it's hard to argue with that. She had the opportunity to embrace both versions of herself, striking a balance that could have preserved her sanity and even enhanced her life. Her younger self wasn’t a threat but a gift-a chance to live more fully and freely. Instead, her choices spiral into sheer irrationality, leaving you exasperated at how much easier things could have been if she'd just thought things through.

@LilithinMerria5 күн бұрын
@@evangeline1216 I disagree. You don’t have to be desperate to try something like the substance. It’s not necessarily about rejecting your old self or refusing to live your life as you are. The way I understood how the substance works is that the “Switching” is the real experience the company is providing. I would imagine that a clone is just a clone, it has an exact replica of your brain but it IS a different brain. The blood transfusion somehow makes it so that one body is comatose and the other is not. Somehow, the transfusion is able to make it so that both brains with keep the memories of the other after each switch. But since she terminated the clone and then jump started the clone’s heart with her own blood transfusion is why they could both be awake at the same time. I think the clone being awake by itself would probably be the default, and the switching between is the way you keep yourself as one. But her insecurity coupled with a very judgmental and shallow community causes her to split in half. The fight between the two clones is basically the same fight Demi was having inside herself the whole beginning of the movie, but just shown literally. Seems like it happened to the old doctor too, we allow our dreams of our younger selves to eat away at our present selves, and before long we become a wrinkly old person who is filled with regret.

Another thing I love about the movie is the way that almost everything is ironic in nature. For example, despite the fact that Elizabeth is still a very attractive and beautiful looking woman, she perceived herself as looking ugly on both the inside and inside but ended up becoming said thing that she feeling about herself. Another part that is ironic is that in the beginning, Elisabeth mentioned the word “jellyfish” and when she does die in the end, she LOOKED and died like a jellyfish while looking like the ketchup spot from the burger that the dude accidentally dropped on her star. It’s a very sad but relatable depiction of aging, social pressure, beauty standards and self-loathing. While it’s mostly told from the perspective of women, this is also a tale for men as well. For example, I have my own issues of self-loathing despite the fact that I work out at the gym. I still deeply struggle with it myself, particularly whenever I look at myself in the mirror because of my perceived “fatness” or “ugliness.” But unlike Sue or Elisabeth, I can kind of deal with it a bit better and I grew to accept certain parts about myself and doing my very best to try to work better on myself.

Also when you notice that dude who was also on the treatment, and was crashing out and sort of projecting himself onto Elizabeth (even if its technically right, him saying the quiet part out loud sort of made it worse mentally)

@ but it makes you wonder why would he put her in this situation, knowing full well what was going on and was going through a similar experience. You would think he’d warn her a lot sooner.
