I have essentially blocked out the abuse I experienced as a kid, so I can relate. Now there's a gulf between me and my sisters because they trigger ptsd in me just being around 2 of them, because I used to step in when our parents would make them cry and get them to redirect their anger towards me instead. Or they tell me about bad things that happened to me that I dont remember until they say it, like the time my mom tried to choke me. Memories are weird. (One parent was an alcoholic, the other was addicted to pain medication so they dont remember much of what they did to us, so they say. The worst part is, my mom defends herself by saying 'I did the best I could' and I'm just sitting here in disbelief like 'that was your best? Dammmnnn...glad you never did you worst then)

@@joevanno4323 When I read that your mom choked you I got so much ptsd cause it reminded me of when my dad almost choked my sister to death in front of me. It was weird between us, either we stepped in for each other or did nothing (which was mostly just her staying out of the situation when I needed help or saying it was my fault that I "made them mad") As we got older she kept blaming me more and more until she just stopped trying to help me at all. She would even scream at me when I was crying from the pain. I doubt she remembers but we don't really talk now. The fights in Avatar are so fire because they had to get creative with the age-rating and all. It also probably wouldn't be as much fun to watch if people are instantly crushed by sandwiching rocks, impaled by icicles, burned to a crisp, or torn apart by a whirlwind. They couldn't show blood or death without risking getting the show canned or moved online (which does happen very later on in Legend of Korra, but for a slightly different cause of death and possibly for another reason). Also, Iroh pretty much had depression ever since his son died up until Zuko's fight with Zhao.

At the pond, Ursa explains to young Zuko, "If you mess with [a mother's] babies, they're going to bite you back." This foreshadows the "vicious, treasonous things" she does to save Zuko's life, as is later learned in "The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse". Before other episodes in season 3 this episode provided the closest and clearest glimpse of Fire Lord Ozai's face, with his mouth shown when he spoke, albeit at a distance and barely visible. This episode's title "Zuko Alone" references that Zuko is the only major character appearing in it, except for flashbacks. This is the only episode in the entire franchise in which Team Avatar does not appear. The field of large earth coins that Zuko passes through is the same as that in which Avatar Wan lost his life millennia prior.

The generals knife said “never give up without a fight” which is ironic since he immediately surrendered when iroh broke through the outer (not even inner) wall. Goes to show how promising iroh’s attack was. This proves iroh didnt “quit” because he couldn’t emotionally go on after his sons death, in fact, he CHOSE to not take part in the very thing that took his son away from him: the senseless war. This is when he changed as a person. This was his turning point and the thing that makes him such an amazing character.

SPOILER WARNING FOR ZUKO MOM. Although I suggest you read it or the comics because the show doesn’t really give you any info on her. Zuko mom has a hella dark past. The whole show won’t tell you much about her other than she than she was banished to save Zuko. This is her full history: Ursa lived in a small fire nation village and was a skilled herbalist (her mother was a master herbalist). She was madly in love with Ikem and they both took part in the local theatre (that's where the blue spirit mask comes from). Ikem proposes to her on the stage when they're rehearsing a scene. Ursa is overjoyed and runs to tell her family only to find her mum crying over Roku's headpiece and is told her dad is in the greenhouse with visitors and she should go to them. As Ursa was the granddaughter to Roku, Fire Lord Azulon forces her to marry Ozai in order to fulfill a prophecy from the Fire Sages which will give great power to his family in the future. As they're leaving town, Ikem tries to stop them by blocking their way. Ursa tells Ikem that this is what she wants and it will bring honour to her family. She's trying to keep him safe even though it hurts. At the wedding Ozai tells her that she can no longer have contact with her family or old life. She pretends to go along with this for years but instead continues to write home, passing the letters to a servant who agrees to send them on for her. Later we find out that none of these letters made it home and the letters were just hidden away on the orders of Ozai. When she became suspicious, Ursa wrote a letter to Ikem saying that Zuko was his son. Ozai confronts her and says her actions were treasonous and that he's taken steps to kill Ikem. When she asks him why he's done this when he knows that Zuko is his son, he asks her why she wrote the letter. She says that it was because of her suspicions that the letters weren't going anywhere and that secretly she wished that was the case. Ozai says that from this point he will act as if her wish was granted.... Later when Ozai asks for Iroh's birthright to be given to him instead (after Iroh loses his son), Azulon is furious and tasks Ozai to kill his firstborn to feel the same pain (a bit short sighted on his part considering he's all about power and lineage...). Ursa overhears Azula teasing Zuko about it and confronts Ozai. He confirms he's going ahead with it. Ursa makes a deal - the throne for Zuko's life. She crafts an untraceable, odourless poison. However she must immediately leave the palace after creating it (because Ozai is smart if nothing else) and she's not allowed to take her children with her (or Ozai will hunt them down).

If he would have taken the throne, I doubt he would have gone through the WHOLE character change and growth he went through As u can see, iroh sends them gifts and loved his son, this shows that he did actually value atleast family, meanwhile ozai values power. If iroh would have taken thethrone, I'm pretty sure he wouldnt have ended the war, but just wouldnt have been as cruel. The loss of his son and power of the throne probably would have made iroh bitter or not the fire lord his ppl would have wanted. So I perfer that he didnt get the throne. He needed to find himself. Zuko if u noticed has a crappy family and lineage but he still has iroh and had his mother that had hope in him to be good. Iroh and ursa definitely helped zuko not lose himself to want to please ozai. Azula is a daddy's girl but its obvious he doesnt really care or love his family as a father should. The deep thing about this moment is that when Zuko‘s mom told him to never forget who is she didn’t mean to not forget that he is the son of the fire Lord and hier to the throne. He was supposed to remember is that deep down at his core Zuko is a good person and even if the world gives him shit for being a good person he will always stay a good person and that’s what his mother didn’t want him to forget. Iroh is interesting because there's a lot of room to interpret his backstory. What I get from that flashback - he was actually a bit of a spoiled idiot (though an extremely talented firebender) before the death of his son. He doesn't seem to take his siege of Ba Sing Se seriously, callously cracks jokes about burning an entire city to the ground and gets Zuko and Azula gender-specific gifts when anyone with even an ounce of sense would see that Azula would much prefer the dagger, or something like it. This it NOT the empathetic, kind, thoughtful man we see in the show. That, combined with the talk of his spirit world journey and how he got the title "Dragon", indicates to me that after the death of Lu Ten he wandered the world a while, a broken man putting himself back together. He gained knowledge, wisdom and empathy from these travels - learning from other civilisations, meeting with the spirits, finally seeing the world as it was. Eventually he returns to the fire nation a much better man, planning to influence the fire nation in a positive way - his specific plans at this point are unclear. He bonds with Zuko, but shortly afterwards Zuko is banished and Iroh follows him, unable to abandon his surrogate son, determined to be a better father now than he was before. That's my take, anyway.

The thing to remember is Zuko *was* a nice guy. He became bitter and driven to capture the Avatar, but he was banished because he stood up for his people.

This is one of the show’s best episodes to me because of a few reasons: 1. It shows why Iroh turned away from the ideals of the Fire Nation. He realized after losing his son just how much pain he was causing the citizens of the Earth Nation. He likely was horrified of realizing how many people he deprived of their fathers, sons, grandsons, etc. He understood that the Fire Nation’s war was full of shit. 2. It shows how Zuko really isn’t a bad person at heart. He’s just damaged. He came from a broken family. His grandfather convinced his own father to kill him just to prove a point, his sister is a complete sociopath, his uncle was the most feared general in the Fire Nation, and his mother disappeared. 3. It shows just how much good Zuko can do when he is not under the constraints of the Fire Nation. When he realizes that the Fire Nation will only accept him back as a prisoner, he becomes his own person. He shows that he is capable of great compassion for the downtrodden and will gladly put his life on the line to protect the innocent. 4. The episode is the first time Zuko gets a clear look at just how horrible the Fire Nation’s invasion has been on the Earth Kingdom. Families have been destroyed, people are living in fear, and there are soldiers using the war to extort the people they are supposed to protect. Zuko entered the Earth Kingdom, viewing its people as nothing but obstacles in the way of capturing the Avatar. However when he is completely disowned by the Fire Nation, he is forced to view the world from the eyes of the common man, not as a prince or an exile who still had a ship full of soldiers forced to back him. 5. It shows Zuko the painful reality of prejudice. The Earth Kingdom has been ransacked for so long that its citizens HATE anyone coming from the Fire Nation and honestly, no one should judge them too harshly for it. Even after Zuko takes a terrible beating to save a child and liberate a town, the citizens STILL shun him due to his origins. This planted the seed of Zuko realizing that the Fire Nation has not inspired anything good outside of its borders. It has brought nothing but fear, pain, and hate. 6. What the old man said about Zuko is the third time Zuko has heard the painful reality of how he should start to realize just how terrible his father is. The first was when Zhao pointed out that if Ozai really loved Zuko, he would accept him with or without the Avatar. The second time was when Azula told Zuko just how much of a disgrace he was in the eyes of Ozai and how he would only accept him back as a prisoner. The old man, who is an outsider, points out just how sad and pathetic it is that Zuko would desperately seek the approval of a man who burned his face and banished him just for talking out of him turn when he was just a kid. The fact that Zuko’s shame had now reached the common people was likely the biggest embarrassment for Zuko because it was becoming common knowledge just how hollow his existence was. To this day, I think Avatar: the Last Airbender is one of the greatest shows in the history of television, not just because of its great humor and amazing animation but because of the sheer brilliance of its storytelling, as exemplified by episodes like this.

Fun theory: ty lee is possibly an air nomad (non bending) because shes so agile and quick in her work. Her family is guessed to hold an ancester that fled the temples and is an elite ranking offical in the fire nation. (Good disguise)

Also her hair is brown, eyes are grey, has similar head shape of aang, and works at a circus. Which is work that travels place to place like a nomad.

That explains why Ozai seems to hate zuko, Ozai himself was a 2nd child who believed himself to be more worthy of the throne, and he sees Azusa as the same, more worthy than her older brother.

I really think that Azula cares in her own way. That one snap shot of her and Zuko chasing each other before ursa got the scroll and the two of them laughing at Iroh’s letter show that she wasn’t always a ruthless killing machine. I think her saying Iroh should have bribed Ba Sing Se is how she expresses that she’s pissed her cousin was killed. She can’t express emotions like a normal person so she turns to anger. What she’s actually saying is “Ba Sing Se took my cousin away, we should avenge him and burn the city to the ground. And Iroh is a coward for not avenging his son”

and when you think about it, ozai probably favors azula because of her being a psycho or whatever but also bc she’s the younger child and he identifies with that- he probably has an older sibling complex or something, because he likely resents iroh for automatically being the heir and taking what he sees as his. so he was probably more likely to favor azula even before she came out crazy
