That's the moment when I fell in love with this show. They showed the plate before. They showed Jinshi in the background bending down, but you couldn't see exactly what he was doing. They showed the plate with one fewer brownie after. They give you enough context clues if you look for them, but they don't always explicitly say whats going on.

Throughout this show there are these ongoing misunderstandings Maomao has with the other characters, like Gyokuyou‘s ladies-in-waiting here when they thought she had some terrible childhood because of her arm when she just used poison on herself, that are just so much fun to watch because she herself is always so perplexed by it. She has a different one of those with pretty much everyone and it’s hilarious ^^

Mao Mao built resistance to most poisons but not immune to poisons. Normally people like that may not suit the job much because they can't detect the poisons easily but Mao Mao has the wide knowledge of poisons. She can still see, smell, taste to detect poisons better.

to make it simpler, most (if not all) poison tasters are just cannon fodders. They eat the food first, if they are okay, then it's good to go. Judging by this alone, Maomao would do a terrible job at it, since since kinda immune to some weak poison. This is what she was monolouging about. *BUT* Maomao also has a massive knowledge about poison, that by the smell alone is enough for her to deduce, without having to actually see if it's doing something to her body. This makes her THE poison taster.

yea Gyokuyou's personal servants is like a super squad. While every other consorts, not just the main 4 consorts, but also the others, have at least 10 or more servants, Gyokuyou only had four of them (before Maomao joined), but each of them does have great personality and high work ethic. My personal favoriite is Infa (Yinhua), the one with the shortest fuse.

I watched first episode with y'all, then spent all night reading all the manga, and now back to watch episode 2 interested to see how they'll do some arcs and your reactions to it lol. My one pet peeve that they keep poking on are freckles. Like freckles automatically makes someone look bad. Specially since I looooove them on women haha. Other than that tbh this series does a very modern non pervy good job of like being disgusted at men who like "lolis" and the whole creepy thing anime does where someone looks like they're twelve but somehow it's ok. This series doesn't shun from calling it gross and acting on that to stop it as much as possible within the reality of their setting. It really breaks so many tropes.

the freckles thing is actually a historical reference! It's only recently that they've been seen as attractive or desirable bc traditionally (especially in east asian cultures), the beauty standards have preferred clear, pale skin. I believe freckles were seen as a sign that someone was lower class due to working in the sun. While it might not make as much sense to modern audiences, it's a really interesting look into historical beauty standards of the era this series is inspired by.

​@@jennz7330 This show isn't "historical". It's stated several times in the novel and manga that it's set in a fantasy place that's very loosely based on many eras. So there's things spanning thousands of years. There are things that have happened and some that will happen that did not happen anywhere near this time period at all, and their clothes and customs blend things from like a building style from 6000bc then a dish from 1000bc and then a song from 1000ad. From countries apart. So as an uncle with several nieces I don't see a reason to add something that might hurt little girls with freckles watching a cartoon. Their self image and self esteem. So yeah, freckles, eye shapes, skin types, nose types. All sorts of attributes have had bullies and fans in different times. But if you read the comic at least, they pick on that specifically MANY times. Like someone can just have freckles and they go from a 10 to a 0. It's used as a plot device several times as the ultimate ugly thing. So my hope is that the anime won't do that as much.

@@Saphthings First of all, this is not cartoon, this is anime. Their targeted audience are teenagers, who won't be so easy to be hurt by the wolds or attitude of characters form an anime. Second, I understand your point, but still, if a child watched this anime, and despite how many times her parents or friends told her it is totally fine with freckles, she was hurt and her self esteem is damaged, there are some problems needed to be deal with other than this anime. For me, it would be more accpetable to be like "you pick on freckles? I love freckles, fk this anime." more than "Omg it's gonna hurt someone and damage their self esteem, they won't be happy anymore." I don't think people are this fragile and if they are, as I said, there are some fk up problems that made them fragile, and that would be the true thing needed to be deal with. Honestly, if my girl watched this anime and have questions about her freckles, it would be a great time to talk about history, and how beaty standard keeps changing so no matter how others think, she dosen't need to worried about, being healthy would be more important.

You don't know what the person is dealing with and that's exactly why we shouldn't have a cartoon come up with an idiotic thing to mock when it has NO historical backing to this anime. It was simply picked. Randomly. For no reason. Freckles were seen as a sign of beauty several times within the 11,000 years of sources this cartoon draws from. And at no point in all that historical time was it seen as the ultimate mark of shame it's shown here. In fact it's in western civilizations during several eras that it's been criticized and usually combined with anti-irish sentiment. Otherwise a little bit of powder will cover it easily. *SPOILERS* It's such a thing that they picked on that she doesn't actually have freckles. She tattoos and draws freckles on in order to uglify herself to the point that NOONE will want her... There's _never_ been a period of history in anywhere in the world where freckles would automatically be seen as someone can't even be a concubine, they can't even be a maid, they can only be a lowly servant because it makes them so ugly. Yes. Beauty standards keep changing, and vary even in the own time period. So unless she meets someone that goes, "omg those freckles look so beautiful" then it is not accurate at all. And no. She doesn't. In fact several times people won't recognize her because the freckles makes her so ugly people don't recognize her.

What I mean was, quote what you said, "you don't know what people are dealing with", and the problem they are dealing with is the thing we should be concerned. In reality, if people are unsure about themselves, they would ask their close one to see of it's true, but not taking advice from a random tv show, and if not, then that person's family and friends would more to be the problem I concern about as a counselor, not the tv show. Last, after the frist reply, you said NO historical back up the freckle thing? Man, the show is set in Chinese era, and most of Eastern worlds think anything on the face concerned ugly. Chinese people still think freckle does not look good twenty years ago, and now they are not that extreme, but the majority still prefers clear, pale face than freckles, although I sometimes find it attractive.
