According to Paul Dini and Bruce Timm who created Harley Quinn, she was always psychotic or crazy . She knows how to act like a "normal person" and attempted to fit in with the rest of the world. They’re a several versions of this character so there are some origins stories where she was always crazy and the joker awakened her and then there others where she was turned by the joker
@SubzeroBlack682 жыл бұрын
Well in one of the most recent iteration is she always had issues and was a bit crazy, BUT she was conscious enough to try to be normal and live a normal life. Also, when she was treating Joker as a patient, he always lied about his origin story (he kept stealing other people's origin stories). But you find out that the main Origin story he told her that made her sympathize with him, was actually Poison Ivy's origin story. He stole her origin story to trick Harley into falling in love with him. While Poison Ivy at the time had just turned into a villain and was actually seeking psychiatric help in Arkham and she was about to open up to Harley (when she was a psychiatrist) but at that point Harley was already infatuated with Joker that she missed her chance at helping Ivy and realizing the truth of both Ivy/Jokers origin. So bad timing and the Joker fucked over Ivy and Harley's chance of a better life. Also, that the reason Harley fell in love with Joker, she was actually falling for Ivy without realizing it.

Tech the first version of Harley was manipulated by joker if you watch the Batman animated series she was literally a doctor that wanted to help ppl but since she was young and naive she was easy to manipulate which joker took advantage of. but with each version writers make their own story to fit narrative. Her first true creation and appearance was in 1992 Batman: The Animated Series
@zthemartian6162 жыл бұрын
Yeah Harley has always been a doctor that wanted to help people. New 52 relaunch of DC Comics is what added the layer of, she was always messed up. But it doesn't mean Joker wasn't a manipulator who made Harley into a criminal. It just means there is more to her character then just the innocent victim of the Joker.
@SleepySlann2 жыл бұрын
I am not so sure about her wanting to help people. The episode depicting her backstory, hints that; 1. She always had an attraction to extreme personalities and 2. Hinted that she was just digging for good by working with the famous inmates, in the hopes of writing a paper or book on them.
@abadyr_2 жыл бұрын
Except she was a phony doctor. And she wanted to write a paper on the inmates (and joker in particular) to write a paper on their issues and get rich quick... It was latter retconed to make her a more "legit" psychologist.

Harley's transition from Joker's side kick to her own thing has many reimagining's. In some comics she's depicted as a goody two shoes before meeting joker, in other's she was banging her way through college, in her original Mad Love Story, I don't think she even got tossed into chemicals, but she instead got her super athletic abilities, and an immunity to all toxins and chemicals thanks to ivy giving her a syryum for it instead. (Which sucks cause I don't think she's immune to toxins anymore) This however is personally my favorite imagining of "Harleen" before she meets joker. I like her as a little rascal who grew up to be a bit of a rebel lol❤🖤

Sheera isn't wrong. In most versions Harley was always in somewhat of an edge. The Joker just "released" her either physically or mentally depending on the origin story. But you always sort of have to have the propensity to become that to become that. It's like giving in to your intrusive thoughts.
@AlanSizzlerKistler2 жыл бұрын
The original comics showed she was always corrupt and toxic, Joker pushed it more and also pushed her to be dependent on him for validation. There were no chemicals in her original comics, that chemical bath part of her origin only entered into the comics in 2011 and explained her skin tone changing mostly. Some comic writers have indicated the chemicals increased her aggression and atypical thinking/reasoning, but again most of her psychological make-up was already there, so the cartoon is being pretty faithful to the spirit of her character here even while expanding it by cementing that she made a choice to jump rather than being forced or pushed.

@digimonalvatrax27382 жыл бұрын
There are different origin stories of Harley Quinn, but ALL of them involve her falling in love with the joker, either running away with him or falling into the vault of chemicals. I think the most relevant one is her having a dysfunctional family and wanting to know why they were this way (thus her interest in psychology). It is implied in her childhood that she was severely bullied and misunderstood and that she often craved attention and understanding in which Joker picked up on seeing her. I think she was a bit wild and troubled as a child, but not crazy. She just had an intense way of getting back at the people who wronged her because that was like taking justice into her own hands.

Harley’s backstory has some room for interpretation. I know in Batman the Animated Series where she first appeared she was just a doctor but they didn’t give any more details. It’s fine to interpret that as there being nothing of note but I’m with Sheera on this one. To me, it makes way more sense that she already had something going on to do the malpractice of romantically pursuing your patient. I personally wouldn’t go the overt angle that the show went for but I also don’t think it’s totally out of line. Besides, fucked up people get PhDs all the time.

You guys got it spot on here. Many different versions of Harley over the years from what I've seen, and yet they all have the same defining traits and interconnect to make a whole which is what's soooo wonderful about it. Would definitely recommend the other animated films and series where she appears as they are all so well done.
@nicholasjohnson69192 жыл бұрын
The New 52 did this whole "Harley has always been crazy" thing, but it ruins the original story so I ignore it. It's funny in the show, but in the comics it's basically saying that she always would have become a villain, but the original was a much better story about a young doctor who was a little too ambitious and got manipulated and psychologically (and eventually physically) tortured into becoming Joker's sidekick. The new version underplays Joker's role in it all and makes her leaving him and facing her trauma through him way less impactful
@brycelacy35452 жыл бұрын
Yeah I prefer her original iteration in BTAS too, initially she wasn’t made to be such a big character, she was simply ‘Joker’s girlfriend’ and never had an origin story before she became a psychiatrist. Her becoming Harley Quinn was part of her intrigue into Joker’s mind and his manipulation. She was never thrown in a vat of chemicals I do like that she has more of her own identity now as anti-villain but tbh I just like her original version more.

The "suicide cult" thing Sy is talking about is the real life CIA affiliated Jonestown incident where 909 people, mostly Americans, committed suicide or were killed at a nearby airstrip in Guyana South America. One of the people killed was a Representative to the US House, one of only 2(of 12,415 total) US Congressmen to be to be assassinated while in office, while there have been 4(of 46) US Presidents assassinated. Jonestown is linked to MK-ULTRA (probably) and that is a CIA black ops involving mind control, drug testing on college students and other cold war shenanigans done on US soil and abroad. It is a crazy rabbit hole to look into but it did happen, though obviously it's impossible to ever know for sure what was a part of it and what was done. When congress tried to get the records to perform oversight on MK-Ultra, the CIA and others involved destroyed most of the documents.

i dont know if you know but ill say it anyway Sy Borgman or Ivy's landlord is actually Harley's landlord from the comics, after DC launched The New52, Harley broke up with Joker and went to live alone and bought a building on Coney Island, she also changed her style of clothing. So the show definitely took heavy inspiration from those comics witch is very cool in my opinion, serves as a great starting point for new people while also giving something new to the old fans, so taking that for a show is pretty dope. Sy is pretty funny in the comics also so they did him justice as well. I highly recommend reading those comics cause the showrunners took a very small part of them from the beginning, the rest of the comic is pretty good, Harley tries to be a psychiatrist again, tries out roller derby, also teams up with Power Girl for a bit. Its so fun and insane and its so Harley. Thats it for my TedTalk, thank you for your time.
