Kawai is actually even more of a bastard in the manga than even Ueno. It shows that she is acutely aware of how her cuteness enables her to be seen as the victim in almost any situation, and how she’s mastered using that to deflect blame away from herself and onto others.
@Daneelro3 жыл бұрын
In the manga, I think Ueno is more of a tragic character, as her motives are made absolutely clear: she has an unrequited love for Ishida and correctly recognised Shoko as a rival from the start. Ishida never realizes this even in the manga (falsely accusing her of bullying Shoko just for fun like he did), and it's unclear if Shoko get it later - Ueno is angry with her on the ferris wheel for not even acknowledging her as a rival. The manga also gives Kawai a mini redemption arc, but honestly I didn't fully get why they forgive her - at any rate, in the entire second arc of the story that is missing from the movie, she helps Ishida & Shoko.
@mikusan67622 жыл бұрын
False accusations? It was pretty clear that the whole class resented shoko because her disability made things work around her. Ayo if I remember right, Ishida’s mom didn’t lose her earring in a fight or anything. The reason ishida’s mom ear was bleeding was because after realizing that her son had destroyed all of nishimiya’s hearing aids she believed the only way she could fix the situation was inflicting pain onto herself, similar to how ishida did to nishimiya’s. So she decided to rip her own earring out. She did that as a way of trying to apologize to nishimiya’s mom on behalf of her and ishida.
@oranjee69963 жыл бұрын
I always thought it was more logical that Nishimiya's mother ripped it out since Ishida did the same to Nishimiya. Makes more sense to me considering how aggressive she's shown to be. No normal person would rip their own earring off.
@teaffeeblend3 жыл бұрын
@@oranjee6996 Paying for the hearing aids are not enough to repay Nishimiya's mother. Nishimiya was bullied every day by Shoyo, even damaging her ear and making her bleed. Shoyo's mother ripping her earring off was in order to pay back the physical and emotional pain that her son inflicted, the ultimate apology for her son's behalf. Bc no amount of money can fix the emotional trauma he did to Nishimiya. She didn't have to do this but she did to demonstrate her remorse and shame. It's an honorable way to apologize, and is very logical at least for me. It follows the "eye for an eye" metaphor.
@oranjee69963 жыл бұрын
@@teaffeeblend I understand that you think normal japanese people would selflessly hurt themselves as repayment, but for me that's not really realistic and it makes more sense that Nishimiya's mother was the one who ripped it off. @@oranjee6996 Well I'm not saying that actual real Japanese people do this..as someone who comes from a very traditional Asian household, this is something I can see my own mother doing if I was in Shoyo's situation. Kawai was by far the worst character. She stood on the sidelines without saying a thing, but not admonishing the others. She's "I'm a victim" the character, but a key part that showed she wasn't was when they were singing on the choir. She purposely mouthed early because she knew Shoko was watching her. The teacher is bad too because he knew the bullying was happening, but only said something when the principle came in and his job was at risk. At least Ueno knew she was trash and by the end was making an attempt to change after the fact. The manga makes her a lot more redeemable as opposed to Kawai where we see how dark her thoughts really are.

The start of their rocky relationship began when Miyako refused to listen to Yaeko's instructions on how to cut Shōko's hair and instead did the cut Shōko requested. The tension later continued due to Shōya bulling Shōko at school. After Miyako paid Yaeko back for the hearing aids that Shōya had lost, Yaeko responded by slapping Miyako so hard that it ripped one of her earrings out and tore her earlobe. Despite this confrontation, after Shōya and Shōko made amends as teenagers, the two became friends and bonded over their terrible luck with men.

As great as this movie was, Ueno was actually a lot better in the Manga. It highlighted a lot Ueno's worst moments and didn't have enough time for her better moments. Kawaii on the other hand I'm really not a big fan of. The reason I prefer Ueno over Kawaii is because Ueno is aware of her problems (her unfair hatred towards Nishimiya) and actively tries to be a better person then she had been. She recognizes that she was a bitch in the past (and still is, let's be honest) and tries to make up for it. The movie kind of hints at that a little bit, but doesn't really make it super clear. Kawaii on the other hand, in the movie and the manga, never see's her mistakes and never takes responsibility for her actions when they were younger. Even as they grew up, she still never thought what she did (or didn't do) was wrong. Maybe it's just me, but a person who recognizes their failures and tries to make up for them is more compelling for me to root for them. That being said, Ueno is still a bitch lol. Also just to be clear, I love this movie to death. The ending bit at the end with the two figures walking, was supposed to be them walking together into their class graduation OR reunion (I can't exactly remember which, but I know it was one of the two.)

I love how you guys noticed the fairly nuanced stuff like how the teachers weren't accommodating her at all in the beginning. Obviously the bullying is bad, but to an extent children are expected to be ignorant and it's the job of the adults in the situation to take care of students with any unique needs such as deafness. In large part, the reason for her bullying was due to the teachers expecting her to do things like sing or talk as normally as the other children. While I certainly don't think that deaf people shouldn't be allowed to participate in such things, they should be accommodated for appropriately by the adults around them.

One of the great things I like about how well the story is written, it shows bullying doesn't always occurs because of 1 party. A lot of things could have been prevented if people cared more. 1. (Class dynamic) The whole dynamic of the class changed by the arrival Shoko. The kids find the class unbearable because they have to do things around her. Deep down all of them resent her. At first some are just teases, Kawai intentionally bait Shoko into ruining the choir knowing she is observing her to follow with the choir, and then Shoyo mocking her speech. 2. (Lack of empathy) Shoyo sees her presence ruining the class's happiness, so when his teases on Shoko make the class seem somewhat happy, he went out of his way to bully Shoko more. He also seem to see Shoko's passiveness toward his wrongdoings as weird. Kinda like fear of the unknown. The rest of the kids either see it as entertaining or join in on it because of the dynamic changes. Kids generally lack empathy around that age. They only care about themselves being happy. 3. (Projection, insecurities) There was a tinge of hope when Sahara genuinely want to help Shoko. But then the girls of the class see Sahara doing that as she doing it to make them look bad and make her look good. 4. (Ignorance, no compassion) So what the class needed the most is supervision. Thats where the class teacher should have come in. I'm not sure if its shown in the movie, but in manga, the teacher saw Shoko being put into the school as a hassle. Somebody who really didnt care about his job. (Great role model, i know) He knows about the bullying, but he doesnt help Shoko in any way. He even laughs along the class when Shoyo made the deaf joke. It was only until Shoko's mom got involved that he actually do something at all because it will jeopardized his job. 5. (Stern parenting) I dont think the movie ever shown it, but Shouko's dad left the family because of her disability and blame it all of the mom's genetics. So the mom hated everyone having views of Shouko as a defect, incapable person. So she decided Shouko must become normal by forcing her into normal environment. Forcing the issue. She put Shouko into a public school that never had a support/program for disable students and insist them to put her into regular class. She thought by putting Shouko among normal kids it will motivate her to be normal, to be capable. The environment just made her more insecure. Even made her feel guilty for ruining a normal happy class by her presence. 6. (lack of self-respect) This 1 Im not entirely I want to say if its on Shouko. Her personality is the product of her environment. But to this day, I do wished, if Shouko respect herself more, people would less likely to bully her. Fight back, say no. Dont feel guilty. Say something, anything. Maybe that dumbass teacher would actually do something if she complained. Maybe Shoyo would notice Shouko as person and actually empathize her. Ueno will still probably be a bitch though coz all she cared about is being in Shoyo's interest. Shouko even had a dream sequence of the class where she coulf be normal socially. Where she took all of those teases as friendly tease and able to respond back. How things could have been different. I just hope no one else in real life suffer like this. I hope they have good support around them, given helpful programs. Help your communities, folks.

I really love your analysis. I've always been a bit sad about the fact that most viewers of the film just focus on the "bullying bad" aspect and don't try to read deeper into it. Not to say bullying isn't bad but that the movie had a lot of other underlying messages too. The school really wasn't prepared to accommodate Shouko. Aside from a superficial effort to teach sign language, the other kids weren't counselled at all. I don't know how it is in the west but disabled kids in public school especially at such a young age are very rare. I never met one in all my time at two different schools. So the class resented making allowances for her. Like how Ueno didn't like the fact that she had to help Shouko with her studies and notes something she worked hard on. Even in the seen when Shoyo mocked her way of talking he did it after he saw the teacher reprimand Ueno for her reading but gave a "pass" to Shouko. It can be difficult for young kids to understand why they have to do that, why the have to, in their minds, disrupt their good routine for someone new. And explaining all this to them was definitely the school's job. Even for notes etc it was the teachers that should have prepared in advance instead of shifting the responsibility to a student.
@kyriss123 жыл бұрын
You're spot on about that last part. I personally had a shit home life, and got in the habit of avoiding confrontation at all costs, keeping my head down, flinching from loud noises or sudden movements as a direct result no mater how many schools I moved to the one constant was that I got pushed around by everyone. Another thing I liked about this movie was the portrayal of suicide. In both cases it didn't come with any grand gestures, or angsty notes, it was sudden shift in mood seemingly for the better, quite balancing of accounts, and elimination of personal effects. And was only avoided Shoyo's mom was good attentive parent and recognized the signs, while Shouko was just lucky that Shoyo came in at the right moment.

This is a very good summary. IMHO number 6 was definitely intended by the author of the manga, and you'll see it even better if you think about the ferris wheel scene again. Ueno is a bitch because she is jealous (Shoyo doesn't even notice her love for him while he warms for Shouko), but she is _also_ angry with Shouko because she won't recognise her as a rival, denies her even the feeling of having lost a fair fight for the boy. (Ueno is, of course, blind to Shouko's self-respect problem - which also prevents Shouko from noticing Ueno's motive earlier -, but that's another issue.)

I've learn a lot from reading the Manga; and still people pointed out things I was not aware of or had incorrect. Here is a couple. Shoya learned to communicate by getting attention and picking on people he actually likes .. that's why it showed him pulling on his friends pants and roughhousing. Sign language, he was interested in it until he sensed "the class" thought it wasn't cool. The movie, he is constantly observing how people react to things and you see him thinking before he plays out on what he sees as "the accepted opinion". One theme was that society actually handles bullying by bullying itself to pull someone "marginalized" back to what it sees as "normal" .. it is like a spring that snaps back from time to time when something happens to expose that bullying and someone will pay for "that snap" while the others will go on "as if they did nothing wrong" and will continue on in their bullying manner.

when i first saw the movie, I didn't take notice to the subtle ways shoyo acted. When shoko was first introduced, he seemed very excited yelling and stuff, which I interpreted it as shoyo being rude right off the bat but it was just shoyo's childlike curiosity. Also, he seemed very interested in sign language as the teacher was explaining it. He only ever started being mean to shoko as he notices how his classmates acted towards her, thus playing the class clown as his classmates reinforced his behavior. This lead to shoyo being more aggressive and it culminated to shoyo scarring shoko. Once shoyo started being bullied, he started to actually resent her a little bit and it ended up in their big fight right before shoko moves away. It doesn't justify or lessens shoyo's actions but it humanizes shoyo more and makes him slightly more forgivable compared to my opinion of him the first time around. Shoyo was always the reactor to situations and if the class was accepting more to shoko, they probably would have became friends and shoyo would have learned sign language early on. The teacher I feel like was the biggest turd in this whole ordeal as he could have easily prevented this situation from spiraling out of control if he punished the class for how they treated shoko and having shoko and shoyo reconcile their differences instead of leaving shoyo to his own devices.

As a teacher myself, I think in the 6th grade, everything was the teachers' fault, he didn't care enough to prevent it or even stop it. the teacher was fully aware of what was happening. I've taught physically and mentally impaired kids in my class alongside other kids and I've kept myself very aware of how everyone gets along without actively interfering unless necessary. Kids are very kind and very friendly if they understand the circumstances, but that's a teachers' duty to explain it in a sensitive way and let them know. 99% of the time the kids are amazing in dealing with disabled people, and when they're not, talking with them about it will make a huge difference.

This. A lot of people hate on Ueno or Kawai, but the real villain of this movie was their piece-of-shit teacher. He didn't lift a finger to stop the bulling of Shoko and made no effort to accommodate her or integrate her better into the class. In fact he seemed to be laughing a long at some points. He clearly resented the extra difficulty her presence caused. He only finally did something when the hearing aid incident made him look bad, and that something was to throw Sho, the problem kid, under the bus. He's the one that singled Sho out and turned all the other kids - even the fiercely loyal Ueno (no Japanese kid could withstand that sort of peer pressure, even if she was in love with Sho) - against him. He's the literal source of all their trauma.

I highly recommend that you seek out the original manga, which is even better (the official English version is on Crunchyroll). Having seen the film, it won't have the shock value for you as for an unprepared reader, but IMO it is still worth it because the film had to omit or simplify the storyline and the flashback structure.

i think the most underrated scene is the moment they all feel relived to see shouko alive after hearing about her suicide attempt and while tearing up hugging her and sad kawai tries to tell her why did you try to do that and that everyone has stuff they go through not just her....it really hits me...i liked that scene a lot..in context of the film its not coming from the nicest person but in a normal setting i get what she means and its true....its very selfish to kill yourself...it effects others too who care...she indirectly changed all their lives so if she just killed herself they all would feel lost and felt like it was all for nothing...and just depression..more suicides may follow..as much as they may think that their lives would be better if she just disappeared after they got back together, the fact is it would not cause they can't change the past and they have to move forward and make amends and make it all worthwhile..otherwise its just darkness and pain..nothing is learned...they would just scaepgoat and hold him responsible anyways...again..back to square 1..ignorning...shedding blame...

I think them not being able to remember if kawaii did anything is showing exactly how she was supposed to be portrayed. She may not have ever said anything to shoko but in the end she acts like she's better than all the others even though she stayed silent and played along with the bullying. If she was such a good person in the situation why didn't she ever report it to a teacher?
@danniemo46153 жыл бұрын
Easy: that bitch must be a fake narcissist. Always blaming the others for the bullshit they also pulled to make themselves look good and avoid having their inexistant conscious shot to hell. Kawai is the only one who never got repercussions for her actions, because she actually took part in the bullying. Rewatch the choir scene, rewatch how she stood by when Ishida and the others bullied Shoko. The teacher was also in on it. The bitch was there and didn’t do ANYTHING. Years later, she opened her mouth to gaslight Ishida and used the situation to her advantage to appear like an angel to the few friends Ishida had managed to make. She lied openly so and didn’t give a damn! She was the worst!

So a little bit of analysis for anyone that cares. When they were kids, Ueno did try to be friendly with her, but she felt that it was unfair for Shoko to get treated better than her and others. Like how when they were singing in class, she thought that despite their hard work they would easily be humiliated because the deaf girl can’t sing. When they were reading parts of a chapter in class, the teacher, called her out and told her that she should be better at reading, but when shoko started reading, and we’ll obviously terrible, the teacher said that she did ok. Shoya noticed all of this which is why his first confrontation with her was him telling her that everybody hated her. Shoya was pretty observant at the time, but he saw things more like a game. When he first saw Shoko, the first thing that came to mind was “A New Boss”, so he always saw her as alien. Everything she did was alien to him, her lack of care for what other people made blatantly clear to her, like when they kept leaving her behind, made her seem strange and when he told her that and she still wanted to be friends, he grew angry at her differences. Sahara was the first to try and be friends with her. When they tried to teach sign language in class, Ueno didn’t want to learn cause she just saw it as the school giving her better treatment. When Sahara said she’d learn, Ueno just saw her as a suck up, which is why she made fun of her and Shoko. Kawai was involved with bullying but as a bystander. She didn’t directly bully Sahara and Shoko but she laughed at every insult thrown at them, and didn’t do anything about it. When Shoya started snitching them out she cried herself out of the situation and made herself a victim of Shoya s accusation, and she did this even when he confronted her in high school, and she snitched him out. They threw the blame on him, even his friends who were also a big part of it as they encouraged him. Shoya being outcasted gave him social anxiety to an extreme. No matter the year, his group of friends started telling everyone about how he was a bully, and how no one should get close to him. He eventually stopped trying to make friends, sopped trying to talk to people in general. When we see him alone in school the first time, he doesn’t approach anyone because he imagines other people talking about how terrible of a person he is and about how much he is a loser and a loner. He was at the tipping point of suicide. So when he decided to do it, he knew he had to get the final guilt off his chest. But saying he wanted to be friends with her threw his plans off track, it was his life line that he unintentionally threw, hoping someone would help. He didn’t know why he did it, nor did he acknowledge it until the end when he asked her to help him live. Shoko was feeling useless and a problem to the world, she started thinking she was the root cause of Shoyas problems. Ueno wanted to repent, to make amends with Shoya because she let him take the blame for when it happened, so she thought that she need to get Shoko away from him in order to save what little life he had. She tried to get him to talk with his old friends again, but they didn’t care for him then, but they cared enough to not let him die. Ueno knew she was part of the problem but she would never admit it, but nearing the end, she did a bit of change in heart when she did learn sign language, maybe just to insult her, but enough to show that she does plan to change herself. Sahara came back into Shoko life because she had to apologize for being a “coward” for running away then and for running away when they both needed help. So yeah long rant, but I love this movie a lot so it deserves it.
