If you have a cordless drill just use self tapping sheet metal screws. This will allow you to secure the board directly to the hull. Works great and it's very fast. We tried it on one of our test boats in the yard. If you use screws about every two inches then your able to sail within a few minutes after the foam hardens.

Excellent, practical video. I'm going to create an emergency "hole" procedure for my boat. 1. Start the engine and turn on the bilge pump. 2. Find the hole. 3. Slow the water from the inside as quickly as possible (cushion or lifejacket). 4. Slow the water from the outside - fother with plastic sheet or sail. 5. Replace temporary internal stop with sealed plywood (drywall screws and cordless drill).

I've learned quite a bit from watching this test. Well done. Gives me much to think about and sets my mind at ease that I can do this if needed. Thank you

Self adhesive waterproof flashing is what I carry. It's a 4 or 6 inch wide strip of super sticky butyl rubber. Sticks well when wet and has good strength. I

I think the board with a goop substance and a drill to drill some holes around the board and a screw driver would be best method. The cushion to start with to slow the inflow and give some breathing space to prepare the board etc. that goop in the container to stem the flow in the hull fitting video looked like the right stuff. We should know our boat enough to know the location of hull fittings and also be prepared to tear the stowage areas apart to gain access to areas below the water line. Great stuff to see though, great learning video. Thanks heaps. Personally I like steel hulled boats.

Thanks- I read about fothering in a Patrick O'Brian novel and I couldn't understand exactly how they got the sail under the hull. Awesome!

I like the hole plug device that just made the hole bigger. Like an umbrella that makes you wetter or a life jacket that drowns you. Clever stuff

Brilliant idea to work through the possibilities, and many thanks for it. Another method that might work is 2 pieces of strong wood sandwiching a board - with or without glue etc. Pierce enough of a hole in the middle of each for an 6 or 8 mm cord to pass through - length depends on the size of hole. Pass the first piece of wood through the hull with line attached FIRMLY. Place the board over the hole next and lastly the third piece of wood. Tie it off and tighten up like a tourniquet. The whole thing does not need a lot of strength to close the board against the hole.. Incidentally I have not tried it - but it is a simple variation on the engine cover trick - so should work.

We were caught in Bass Strait in a gale with a bow thruster tube broken and leaking. Using a sail didn't work as the sharpness of the bow prevented it getting any real seal. Direct pressure wouldnt work in a gale - we were being thrown against the cabin top in 6m close waves in the bow. Ultimately sealed the tube with two flexible plastic bowlswith ropes going through them to hold them in place. very similar to using the plywood with sound deadening in the first part of this video. Lewmar who installed the bowthruster in an glass exhaust pipe with no gelcoat on the inside in this beneteau 50 should have been sued for negligence as no support was given to the 50lb motor and inappropriate tube - We managed to get home to melbourne without further damage. When we complained they ignored us

Although the tarp worked OK in the yard with no forward motion, it would be very different when trying to sail back to the dock against waves and current. Those little lines would easily tear one corner off the tarp, or stretch and part. Also with forward motion the front edge of the tarp would catch water and peel itself away from the hull. Perhaps it would work better if the tarp were big enough to keep the leading edge completely out of the water, in which case only two low tension lines on the back corners would be needed to keep the tarp centered. I like the first effort with the external plywood and soundproofing patch pulled in with a line, but it would take some time to fabricate and it wouldn't work on a very curved surface. There's a lot to be said for the versatility and simplicity of a cushion.

Best method, a 1/4" plywood board slathered with a water compatible epoxy screwed down with self drilling screws using an electric drill. Not 120 volt AC but preferably18 volt DC. If the water rises over the repair area, you would have to do a temporary fix then pump it low enough to use an electric drill.

And who would make sure that their cordless drill was always fully charged because the batteries often run flat over time. Single handed you would never get a tarp over the hole in time, shoving anything through the hole and expanding it outside the boat in a pitching sea while trying to balance yourself would be sooooo bloody difficult and take far to long. Only serious contender I can think of is epoxy putty, slap a board over it and brace it somehow. What was worrying was that of all the methods they tried, none were really that successful and this was in a controlled environment, even so they looked absolutely knackers by the end. EPOXY PUTTY I think.

I wonder how well the sail and plastic sheet would have worked if the leak had been further aft abeam the keel? I think it would not seal there because a void would occur as it stretched from the bottom of the keel to the hull stopping the tight wrapping from occurring.

This was fantastic. I'll be adding a small tarp and some grip-clips to my "Calamity Locker" very soon! If you ever repeat this, perhaps you could try gluing the plywood over the hole with epoxy putty, like "Mighty Putty". I've had someone drill a 1/4" hole in one of my boats to slowly sink it, but I was able to plug it with "Attwood Epoxy" from Wal Mart. First, I stuffed a small piece of wood into the hole, then cleaned the surrounding area. I mixed up some putty and then pulled the plug and pushed the putty into place, using a spoon to force it into the hole. It set up and the new owner claims that it hasn't leaked a drop! Because of this, I have a *lot* of "Mighty Putty" aboard my new boat, perhaps a dozen sticks of it!

a rubber toilet bowl plunger wedged against the inside of the haul would probably work very well if the hole was small. if anyone is familiar with a load lock, that's an expandable rod used in the trucking industry to hold loads in place in the trailer. So a toilet bowl plunger head with a load lock rod to hold the plunger head in place. most definitely do it. in fact that's such an awesome idea I'm going to send it into the u.s. patent office.

If the boat is heaving or it is a solo sailor the plastic sheathing would be much more difficult. It was a very good demonstration though and left me feeling much better about my ability to control flooding to a reasonable enough degree that the pumps can handle it. Maybe I will do that northwest passage in a fiberglass boat after all.

The problem with fothering is the water pressure as the boat moves. As he alluded to, the pressure of waves and the motion of the vessel may reduce the ability of this to work as the fabric is pushed away from the hull.

Take rubber inter tube and staple it to a piece plywood with a hole in the middle for a piece of rope. Place over the hole from the outside and pull on the rope and should stop the leak.

Keeping a well charged 18 volt DC drill ready charged and the proper screws also important, fiberglass holding strength and length, that with the compataible epoxy,as mentioned here by"Sheetbender" should work very well.all the other methods just seem to make the hole bigger, except the sheet method but what good under sail would the diaper be ,I,ed guess near impossiable to apply.

I think in a seaway the tarp will bellow or rip away and suspect the rubber backed ply, pulled tight with a rope from inside would be best.

Thinking outside the box - what if you had some kind of large inflatable bags wrapped around the keel and positioned on the side of the boat with the hole. The bags are inflated and causes the boat to heel to one side, lifting the hole out of the water. Then a more permanent repair can be made.
