Andy thanks for sharing. I need to mount mine back in the truck after getting it back from you. Glad i didn't disassemble mine. Send it to the guy who knows what he is doing.

Awesome video Andy! That first one was a hot mess.

In the new display the 1st vertical line from the left is missing, and so is the 1st horizontal line from the bottom. Look how thin the first signal segment looks, and how the menu letters are cut at the bottom. A/B is displayed as A/R and SPL is displayed as SPI

Andy, how does someone get ahold of you for repair work?
@vk2sky5 ай бұрын
Good work, though investing in a phone tripod would hugely improve the video quality and free up your second hand. 🙂

Great work, whe mine goes out i will send it to you, by chance do you fix the Kenwood TMV7 cool blue screen?

Excellent work. You have any repair advice for those micro switches acting up? I have to mash down like mad On the power button to get it to turn on.

Great job! Do you also do repairs on 897D’s? I have one with some striping on the screen.

Electronically it's the twin brother to the 857 but in a different package.

Replacing the whole board is quick and convenient but doesn’t anyone work on reseating the tiger stripe to the board and lcd screen? I have reworked some smaller screens on commercial radios, it’s a pain and takes patience to realign that silicone conductive strip with both the board and lcd.
@andyruggiero34453 ай бұрын
reseating is impossible, there is nothin to reseat. heat guns and other attempts to FIX the LCD does not fix the problem. the LCD must be replaced. It is not about convenience it is about necessity.

Andy, do you check the boards for full function? For some reason my external meter doesn't work properly. It acts like there is a constant voltage on it no matter the meter mode. I haven't bothered delving into the issue to even see if the meter is controlled from the panel or somewhere else.
@Subgunman4 ай бұрын
Did you have the head reworked for the missing stripes issue or did it never work? You can get schematics off of the internet to see where the control for the external meter comes from but I beleive it is controlled by board in the control head.

there is a tiny ribbon cable that may have gotten out of position. does the meter work from the back of the radio?

Why wouldn't you give it a quick dust off then disassemble the head and put all the inert/plastic bits into an ultrasonic cleaner, then used electronic safe aerosol solvent to clean the board/electronics?
@andyruggiero34454 ай бұрын
great care needs to be taken not to have a cleaning process for the plastic parts not to damage any of the silkscreen lettering. I use a special cleaner that does not harm the plastic and paint. I would fear an ultrasonic cleaner would attack this. The electronics are cleaned at the time of the rebuild, day to weeks ahead of the installation. I use cleaners designed to remove flux and acid deposit from handling. this prevents long term corrosion. I have performed the same cleaning process on almost 600 of these now over 8 years so this is now all standard work process.

That is the W O R S T display in the history of ham radio, almost impossible to read in a mobile environment without pulling off on side of road or wrecking your vehicle. Sorry I ever bought this radio., biggest mistake in ham radio experience.
