I just got an 891 a week ago. I'm managing to get used to the menus and so far, I LOVE this radio. I got it for portable, RVing, and venturing into POTA. My shack rig is an FT-710, which I also love. I've been a tech for 30 years but just upgraded to general about six months ago and just now getting into HF. Man, wish I'd done this at least 25 years ago! 😂 The "College of KZbin" has been a huge help.

I’m really gonna’ have to ditch my magnet mount. I sometimes switch cars but not so much anymore. If anyone is wondering about the DX possibilities of the FT891/ATAS-120A combo, I’ve got 51 DXCC entities and I only drive 10-30 minutes at a time…and that’s with a magnet mount. QRZ Logbook. I set the 3 programmable buttons to DNR, WDH (bandwidth filter) & TNR for the ATAS (I don’t stay on any band if it sounds dead). I power it strictly from a 15Ah Bioenno battery-was going to do POTA but zero time. Looking forward to more videos. 😊 WB3CFN

I just uninstalled my FC-50. The ATAS-120A Is working so well that I never use the ham sticks anymore. I prefer to take advantage of the resonant ATAS antenna rather than fool the radio with the FC-50. There is still a high SWR on the coax, so there is unnecessary power loss when using the FC-50.

The radio is very compact. Probably too compact for a touchscreen. But Yaesu won’t change a radio physically after it is introduced. They might release something new to replace it though. If you want a touchscreen, consider the FT-710 AESS while the price is still reduced. It has been on sale for $1049.95, versus $1,299.95.

If you watch the playlist for the ATAS-120A you will hear me explain that the FC-50 is not connected. The radio and the FC-50 are still screwed together, via the special bracket, but there is no electrical connection. I used ham sticks before. The FC-50 was used to touch-up-tune the band edges. The FC-50 cannot be used with the ATAS-120A. The menu selection in the FT-891 is for either ATAS or External Tuner, but not both simultaneously. There are still more videos about the ATAS-120A. They will be released in the coming weeks.
@AE6Z Жыл бұрын
Good video, tnx. I’ve been confused by this, can/should the ATAS be used in conjunction with that FC tuner? I’m really impressed with the ATAS/891 combo, just installed permanently in my Suburban. Tnx again , 73 de AE6Z
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
The FC-50 cannot be used with the ATAS-120A. You have to go into the FT-891 menu and select ATAS or External Tuner. It’s an either or scenario, but not both. You won’t need the FC-50. The FC-50 is an antenna matching unit. It acts as a transformer, so the radio thinks the antenna system is tuned perfectly. The mismatch still exists in the antenna system. The ATAS-120A is an active tuning antenna system. The FT-891 sends power through the coax to a motor in the ATAS-120A that adjusts the antenna as the FT-891 monitors the SWR. Once the SWR is low enough for safe operation, the FT-891 stops sending power to the motor. The ATAS-120A gives the radio a tuned antenna system to work with. It’s like having a separate perfectly-trimmed antenna for each band. 73, de N4HNH
@AE6Z Жыл бұрын
@@n4hnhradio Yes, makes sense. Are you planning to keep the ATAS and repurpose the FC50?
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
Still debating the fate of the FC-50. Definitely keeping the ATAS-120A. I suppose I should separate the FC-50 from the radio and store it. On the other hand, the FC-50 isn’t hurting anything staying attached to the radio mount. I guess I could keep it there, in case I need it as a backup. 73, Doug
@kb9jqu Жыл бұрын
@@n4hnhradio I’d keep it as a backup or for other antenna tests. Probably just need to explain the FC50 is bypassed when using ATAS-120A. I get the same power line noise whilst driving around. Really makes you aware of how much man made noise we have to deal with.
@n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
True dat, Curt. I might need it for some more comparisons. There is a school I drive by, near my house. Every time I drive by, a horrendous noise blocks my 2m ICOM mobile receiver. @n4hnhradio Жыл бұрын
The video was filmed during the daylight hours listening to the 40m band. That means the propagation was regional, within 400-500 miles. The digital noise reduction (DNR) uses programmed algorithms to separate signal from noise. Algorithm 9 is my favorite. You can learn all about these algorithms by watching videos on this channel. There is also a playlist dedicated to the FT-891. 73, de N4HNH

I don’t know about earlier versions. I bought mine in February of 2018. I updated it in February 2021. Mine isn’t watery at algorithm 9 or higher. But you must first reduce the noise with IPO and RF Gain. Don’t send unnecessary noise to the DSP and it will do a better job.

Most modern radios include the same or similar features. That’s why I try to get people to understand that the techniques I show can be applied to other transceivers, and not just other Yaesu radios.
