Thanks for posting this. I originally was going to get an FT-818 in the next few weeks, but I really haven't been impressed with the "enhancements" they made. Basically, all they did was a few minor tweaks and slapped a new number on it. I still need to run the numbers regarding pricing for what I want, but I think I might be going with the FT-891.

Very good review Denis! I just purchased an FT-891 and your video gave me a nice overview of the radios operating functions. I have not gone over the manual yet and was curious about the PH/SP selector on the back of the head. I figured it was a speaker/headphone option, but never really thought about why. It makes total sense if the main radio is mounted far away from the head...lol! You are right, I have yet to see any other review videos mention this. Looks like a sweet little radio. I am anxious to try it out. Now subscribed...73!

I own the 891 and I find that the flexibility it gives you would beat out the 991 in both usability and price. The noise reduction is first rate and I have no problem in punching out for decent DX. When I first saw that small hole on the back of the radio I initially thought it was for a Kensington lock but it looks a bit larger than it should. The manual states that there is a switch inside that hole for updating the firmware. I'm not sure if a Kensington lock will fit inside that hole or if it would damage the switch. One thing I wish this radio had was a mobile mounting bracket like the FTM-300 where you can push a lever and slide the radio out. 73 KD5YOU

Looking at this one for a mobile and park rig. Looks like the big ham radio stores have a great price on them now. I am curious about your diesel however. Today's diesels use solenoid fired injectors. You would have to go back to the earlier days of mechanically fuel injected diesels in vehicles to get this advantage. My '03 Duramax is noisy in my AM Car radio and would venture to guess it would be horrible on a HF rig.
@VE3BF4 жыл бұрын
I've had this radio in the truck quite a bit, stationary mobile, I occasionally do run the engine for cab heat in the winter months ant there is a bit of noise from the injectors I simple capacitor across the power lie would take it out but the FT-891's noise blanker does remove all the noise I have. 73 DE VE3BF

Using ft-891 with a Heil proset 6 headset with boom. Hello Denis, your videos are great, they are well done. I have a question about plugging in a Heil headset on the ft-891. The jack on the Heil headset is longer than the one on the stock mic. I cannot slide on the front panel because there is not enough clearance. Do you know of a way to use a Heil headset with mic boom on the ft-891?
@VE3BF6 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's a hard fit that's for sure, I have used my Proset 6 with the 891 but it takes a lot of fiddling around. I found that leaving some of the extra cord in the radio towards the centre works best, if you'll the adapter cable tight towards the opening the front just does not snap in. I'll see if I can film a little video on my method (if I can get my fingers out of the way lol.

The 891 has and external speaker jack on the back of the main rig, it also has a speaker/headhone jack on the left sine of the detachable face. The switch on the the back side of the panel is an attenuator that lowers the audio output for headphones use or at full power for an external speaker when the head is remotely mounted from the main body.
