In this video we compare the selectivity between the option Yaesu 300Hz Crystal filter to the 500Hz crystal filter by listening to a weak signal with a nearby strong signal.

As a side note to the other commenters. Adding the filter may increase the resale value of your radio as well as giving a slight benefit now. Just a thought.

After having the radio for a few months now, I find that the main benefit of the 300Hz filter is that I can save the filter setting for a band and I don't have to manually reduce the digital filter bandwidth. So even if it isn't a great benefit over the digital filter, having it engaged by default is likely worth the money.

Thanks for your test. I did spend the extra money on the 300hz filter after I had used the radio for several months, and I was unsure if I had wasted my money. Most times there is very little difference between the 500 hz and the 300hz both digitally set to 50 hz. But on chasing real very signals the 300hz can just pull the station out of the noise. Would I recommend you spend the extra money on the 300hz filter, NO is my answer. Spend the money on a very good pair of communication headphones.

Amazing video! You are a super smart guy! Its still a difficult decision for 200USD. But the benefit is clear. Great experimental setup.

A real life test would say much of a test .

Sorry, I think I am ADD, didn't listen to the video in full. I thought I'd indulge and share my experience instead. 1975 bought a Drake C Line and a 500khz filter. (kind of a mistake buying , but not really). I then got a 250khz filter and Wow I could cut out a lot of the adjacent signals, pick out weaker ones. it was a no brainer the narrower filter in a crowed band. I miss the Drake, so simple and so Good.

The main thing I've noticed is that the digital filtering in the DX10 is so good on its own that the mechanical filter's contribution is very small. It does make a difference but likely not enough to warrant the purchase.

Not much difference. The 300 Hz filter does bring in a weak signal much better with a high noise floor. I don't know if it is any better than the digital filter. I may have wasted my money.

I'm not hearing a big difference. My Ten-Tec Eagle has a 600Hz and a 300Hz, with similar additional DSP filtering but I think the DSP filtering on the FT-DX10 DSP has a higher Q. I suppose I could redo the test with a 20 over adjacent signal to see if the 300hz makes a bigger difference. I believe it's supposed to have sharper skirts than the 500hz filter but the DSP is making a bigger difference than I thought it would.

@@HamRadioQRP You are right. A stronger signal could make a difference.

@@HamRadioQRP the main reason I haven’t spent the extra 200$. Would still like to see adjacent 20 over signal.

Yep, I'll redo the test with a pileup busting 1-watt on the KX3 and see what difference it makes.

That’s really interesting, while there’s a discernible difference it doesn’t seem enough. I’ve had a filter on back order now for quite a while and my CW isn’t that good and I think I’d not get the best value out of it. Maybe a CW expert would. Thanks for posting 73 Mike
