Thanks for the detailed description of each product. I like the multiple mounting clamps on the Yakima and the Thule, plus the strap guide on the Thule. Just bought a new Crosstrek and Aero crossbars so that I can get kayaks ... but I'm not crazy about the J Bars that I bought with only a single mounting bracket on each, or the lack of rubberized protection on the buckles.

Thule and Yakima tend to have a rubber buckle cover on the side straps to prevent scratching the vehicle. The Bow and Stern straps are the ones with the unprotected buckle but should be less of a concern scratch wise. All of our brands do a ton of testing to make sure their mounts are safe for reasonable usage. Thanks for your comments!

I own two Yakima JayLows with the locks. I mount them on a factory crossbar.. I bought the racks at seperate times, but I was able to order matching lock sets. I love the the JayLow system, but the strap guide (as seen on the Thule) would be a nice addition.

I've used Thule equipment over the years but in this case, the Yakima wins in my book. Seems like the simplest carrier to install. The plastic parts don't inspire confidence though. Only time will tell how well it performs.

I have the Yakima and the plastic parts are indeed a concern. The tighter you screw down the clamps, they start to bend and deform. Now, you don’t need to clamp them down super tight - they grip extremely well. They have a couple other issues I’ve noticed though. When you strap your kayak down, the rubber pad on the Jaylow seems to dislodge itself. I’ve also noticed the vertical bar doesn’t like to be extended beyond about 95 degrees. 180 degrees or laying flat is possible but it feels like internal parts are being damaged. I like J racks that can lay flat at 180 degrees for loading heavy kayaks from the side. But I love how easy it is to install the Yakima Jaylow.

Hi, I have a 2019 Vw tiguan. I am looking at purchasing the Yakima J kayak roof attached. But I would like to to know would I be able to add an additional roof storage box or basket? If I keel the Yakim j kayak attached in a vertical position?

Hello. The carrier should be mounted and strapped behind the tower, it may be possible to mount the basket or box on the other side and it be attached on the outside edge of the roof rack crossbars. Thanks!

I have the thule xt and that's been giving me problem denting my 10ft slayer propel in the front...the hump thing starting to annoy me. Maybe I need to stay putting more foam there or something. Idk.

Hello. If there's denting from only the weight of the boat then this carrier style should be avoided. The denting could be from over tightening the straps. Thanks!

Looks as though they have discontinued the Thule Hull-a-Port XT and have replaced it with the Thule Hull-a-Port XT(R). the only difference I see is they have removed the clamp system to attach to the roof rack and replaced it with a strap strap system then attaches to the bar.
