So fun fact, the "Manual Dash" (more often referred to as the Magnet Dash) was originally a glitch in the second game. The developer kept it in and made adjustments in the third game to make it more balanced. This glitch is actually near identical to the one found in Sonic Frontiers, which received official recognition by SEGA. I know that last bit is not much of an important detail, I just found it funny.

The thing I really enjoy about this game is that the dev knows you will try to mess around the stages and doesn't punish you for it. Every stage with a vehicle gimmick where you do not start in the vehicle can be beaten without said vehicle. The spinning ziplines in Protest Prison, the helicopters in Protest City, heck, you could beat Lost Riviera without using a single grindrail. This shows how good Spark handles and how developed the level layouts can be. Also, the latest update included adjustments to the killplanes for the waterfalls in my favorite out-of-bounds area (Thanks, Lake!).
@uglybad4 Жыл бұрын
I have a small amount of game dev experience and whenever I'm designing levels around specific mechanics, I realize in testing that said levels are extremely linear and ask the player to perform an exact sequence of actions with the only alternative being a death for not sticking to the script. Seeing levels in a game like Spark 3 that use core mechanics to offer several ways forward, but also rewards going off the intended routes and pushing said mechanics to their limit, shows me I have a long way to go in making fun games lol
@galacticaracer Жыл бұрын
@@uglybad4 I do believe that some gimmicks can be linear. In fact, one in Spark 3 is an on-rails experience where you rotate yourself on a propelled zipline. However, such segments are usually brief and simple. The ability to explore the area surrounding the on-rails gimmick was a bonus. Do not feel bad about your lack of experience in comparison to LakeFeperd; he had 3 Sonic fangames, 2 Spark games, and 3 racing game prototypes under his belt before Spark 3 was even close to being done.

The whole Spark trilogy has been a blast to play! If you wanna hear more vocal tracks, I suggest looking into the OST for Spark 2; there's three different boss themes that all have vocals that cut in at about the halfway point of the fight, and they're all a jam to listen to! Fun fact: you can exit the car and run car stages on foot, and get a faster time. Spark is faster than a car. Other fun fact: the developer recently added all stages from Spark the Electric Jester 2 in Spark 3 as *free DLC*. Because he's just that cool. This brings a lot of additional content to a game that already has a lot (if you're willing to challenge yourself).

I´ve actually been following this developer since I was heck 14. After playing the Sonic Fan games after and before the sequel, that make a cute attempt at telling a story inbetween Sonic classics. I just had to have more. Then I played through a Sonic fan game that was also a metroid vania which was weird but awesome. And then I finally found the Steam page of the first Spark the electric Jester game, planned to be released in 2017. I was stocked and really excited and when the day finally came when it released I dropped everything I was doin and immediately played it. It was magical. My 14 y/o dumbass playing this mix of Sonic, Kirby and much more with its own wonderful soundtrack and characters. The story is a bit weird and dumb but I didn´t give a shit. I was playing the best game ever. And then it was over. Shortly after Lake Feperd announced there would be a sequel focusing on the mechanic fiend which was in the first game. And it would be 3D. Hearing that I was being taken aback. Good game? and now in 3d? Following the devlog and such I was only thinking that this would become the bestest game and it truly was the bestest of Sonic speed. More music, more speed, more action a better combat system. Levels that experienced with momentum based mechanics and SPEEED. Everything I ever wanted from Sonic games. And now the third game. Playing it I never looked back. Only moving forward having a blast, jumping from platform to platform. And going through one of the hardest speed platform challenges ever in the final level. And still the story is overdramatic and stupid but what the heck it´s still amazing. I love this game and I love this series, maybe even more today than Sonic. Lake Feperd made sometihing amazing and it has stayed with me for a big chung of my life and I cherish that.

'Spark the Electric Jester 3' is indeed a fantastic game and I'm glad it's gotten an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. The series has long since deserved that reputation. That said, I think '2' and '3' have really struggled in terms of integrating combat with its core gameplay loop of high-speed platforming. The original 2D 'Spark the Electric Jester' had no such problems because, moving along a single horizontal axis, you had to fight enemies because they would always be in your path. In 3D? Just run and jump around them. '3' basically forces you into arenas just to get some use out of the combat mechanics that would otherwise go unused outside of boss fights. 'Sonic Frontiers' attempted a lot of things and got... some of them right. What I DO think it needs to build up on-and indeed, what other high-speed 3D platformers should take note of-is how 'Frontiers' attempts to integrate speed into the combat. Most notably, the Cycloop, which is the best idea to come out of 'Frontiers' by a long shot. What better demonstration of Sonic as a fighter is there than a move that has him literally run rings around enemies? Another thing is that 'Sonic Frontiers' also attempts to integrate the platforming into the actual mini-boss fights. Sadly, it does not do them enough because too many Guardians lock Sonic into some mini-game sort of thing like flying through the air and avoiding rotating obstacles or falling through rings, but the Asura was really promising, making you run up its arms. That is exactly the sort of thing I'd like to see more of in 'Sonic'; using Sonic's speed as a foundation for his attacks and as his primary tool of engagement against bosses, NOT scripted nonsense like grinding rings about a Strider or sidestepping along a Squid or shifting between rails against a Fortress. Also, if you could please put in a notice for the plot spoilers at the very end, that'd be swell.

Another goofy thing you can do in this game is that if you flip over in a car segment, you dont have to restart. Instead, spark can exit the car and just keep running through the level. If you pair with spark's equivalent to the light speed dash, its actually sometimes faster to do car segments on foot. Its such a weird thing the game lets you do but i love it so much.

@@harleywilkinson the boost and adventure formulas have serious drawbacks. I give adventure series some flack bc those were segas early attempts at creating a 3d title but the blue blur never truly made, and still hasn't, a proper transition into 3d wirh regards to levels design, control and exploration. Along with a ton of other quirky design choices such as the amount of automation within modern stages and use of boring gimmicks. I first played Spark 3 when the teaser demo came out. I immediately bought Spark 1 and 2 and was eager awaiting Spark 3. I told everyone I could about this series, but my voice is only so loud. When Spark 3 finally came out, I can honestly say it was well worth the wait and lived up to the hype, which is almost impossible for any game nowadays. It makes me really happy that this game is actually getting coverage from louder voices now. I think everyone who likes platformers needs know about it. The only things I would take points off for is the enemy attacks are kinda simple (they mostly feel like damage sponges for you to combo). Enemies spawn in way too close to you sometimes, and progressing through levels sometimes requires killing several sets of enemies, but it doesn't tell you how many remaining enemies there are, causing me to slam into the barrier just as the next set loads in. After the final set of enemies is destroyed, it takes a second for the barrier to disappear. All of the levels have these bonus levels attatched to them on the world map except for one, which I wish did. There is also a particular miniboss that you fight several times throughout the game, and I felt like the last time you fight him was just one time too many, just kinda unecessary at that point. Those are really the only things I can take points off for, though. Everything else in the game is incredible.

What I’ve noticed is that whenever games have a AAA level team and scope. What often happens is the spirit of the game gets sucked away. Like that one trope you see in media about hive minds being not human despite having so many humans going into it. Smaller teams lead to the idea being maintained and not lost in greed and the flood of others desires. Indie developers are also just not afraid to go experimental with what they do.

The more people work on a game, the less "vision" it has. Some of the most ambitious and personal games are made by one person because.. there's no publisher telling them to add skill trees, and there's no art designer telling them to make the story more like Marvel movies.

I got this game a week ago and have been enjoying it a lot. I'm so happy that you made a video about it. It's almost baffling to what degree it succeeds at everything 3D Sonic never could. The character feels tight to control, the mechanics are all well implemented and work wonderfully with the level design, and are introduced at a perfect pace for the players to learn and master them. The graphics are vibrant, colorful and appealing, even if not super high fidelity, and the combat, while a bit slippery at times, is more than serviceable, it's actually enjoyable and satisfying. Why, Sega? Why couldn't 3D Sonic be exactly like this? With that said, this isn't Sonic, it's Spark, and it fucking rules.

i absolutely hope this convinces you to play the first two games in the series, they're not as tightly knit as the 3rd game but they're still really strong games Spark 1 is very much still a sonic-like but with little things that help it make it's own identity, and 2 maybe is a less tightly made version of 3 but it's got evEN MORE VOCAL THEEEEEEMES

Why don't we praise Spark on its own merits instead of calling it the "Sonic killer". It can never stand on it's own if we keep it in Sonic's shadow and will ultimately alienate people from playing the great Spark series.
@axelgear666 Жыл бұрын
Several mascot era games during the 90s tried to take on the mantle of sonic, by being different and it's own edgy thing but ultimately didn't quite catch on anyways due to marketing in part but also sonic and marios tight nostalgic grip in the minds of countless fans spanning across generations. It's difficult to elicit change in those who dont want change. Fepard is doing rhe right thing. It could be a waste of money trying to force spark the jester onto others. I remember Konami giant efforts to push "sparkster" aka rocket knight adventures back during rhe genny and snes era and those were phenomenal speedy platforming games at the time but weren't enough pizzaz to dissuade people from Sonic. Sonic has this profound effect on people to continue playing its games whether they're good or bad. ThTs why sega never let go of the blue blur, it markets itself. That's how profound brand recognition is these days. It's unfortunate sega takes this for granted as an excuse to keep experimenting on its fans

I agree tbh. Comparison is fine, obviously, but something being inspired by something doesn't *make* it that thing. I feel the same way with Pokémon-like monster tamers, many people end up either calling them clones or "Pokémon killers" which is just not fair to the game or its dev(s).
@axelgear666 Жыл бұрын
@Cuprite all publicity is good publicity, trolls calling spark a clone are only self marketing the product. It being a sonic killer can't be helped, much like how sparkster was called a speedrunning clone with a jetpack lol. I've pretty much concluded the sonic fandoms are up to the brim and run by fanatical cults

I picked up Spark not too long ago and I’m so happy that I keep seeing more and more people reviewing it. The game truly comes into its own in Spark 3 and it’s just so freaking fun. Probably the most fun I’ve had playing a high speed platformer
@RichDXtreme247 Жыл бұрын
I’m just scrolling through, not letting myself watch the video [Cause I don’t play the Jester series] and I’m seeing a lot of praise but I feel like this praise is either two ways: Coping or Projection Allow me to explain: The topic here is High Speed Platforming, which the Jester series has, right? And there’s plenty of people that really wanted this type of platforming for Modern Sonic the Hedgehog, right? Well, that’s kinda where the problem lies, Sonic is NOT being like Jester or moving around like other 3D fangames or previous tech demos as of currently with Sonic Frontiers. In my perspective, I think it’s fine. Sonic doesn’t NEED to BE like Jester, because as of Sonic Frontiers, he finally has room to grow for his gameplay style and expand more to where he couldn’t have done before. It’s possible that the difficulty for fights and combat will change and become challenging in the Open Zone format. People say that: “This is what Sonic should be” because that’s how YOU wanted it to be for your own self-satisfaction and personal tastes as for what Sonic is currently in a gameplay perspective, as it isn’t up to your own quota or expectations. There’s lots of people who are just aren’t willing to give a chance to new things and would rather insert one style of gameplay from one game into another and say “it’s fixed!” You aren’t treating neither Jester or Sonic games as separate entities, you’re only treating one as an experiment [for the gameplay] and the other as a lab rat to BE tested on [to give said gameplay to]. And i think that feels disappointing to me.

What i hate the most about some people praising the fan made game to be "fanmade did better than sonic team" or "sonic killer" mindset. you can praise the fan games all you want but just to let you know without sonic these fan games wouldn't even exist. hell even with formula of frontiers exist like it or hate it, bigger fan games will coming with expanded playstyle like frontiers. Be grateful that sega even allowed fan games you won't see this often in other publisher.
@lucylu3342 Жыл бұрын
This isn't a Sonic Fan game though? That'd be like calling Tekken a Street Fighter Fan game because they both involve fighting. And these types of games exist because of people's disappointment with games like Forces (And even Frontiers for some), so people pull a "Fine, I'll do it myself" and make their own speed platformers.
@mio3199 Жыл бұрын
@lucy lu ... that is literally what made people saying spark weaponizing against sonic is bad. You dumb as hell if you just realized now, the point people said "Praise the game in its own merits not including weaponizing against sonic" is to say spark should be praise as its own game not as comparasion with sonic games.
@mio3199 Жыл бұрын
@lucy lu also i never said spark is sonic fan game, what you just said just proved my point of spark having inspired formula from sonic games.
@lucylu3342 Жыл бұрын
@@mio3199 Nice random insult, how nice 👍 And I do praise Spark on it's own merits. Game literally has the best level design I've ever played in a 3D speed platformers. The sheer freedom you have in every stage is perfected to the point that it made me want to speedrun the stages on my 2nd go around. Not to forget the combo system that makes fights amazing to play through and require _actual_ skill and timing to do well in. I've never called Spark 3 a "Sonic Killer", Sonic has a habit of killing himself on his own, but despite how mad it makes you, if I WERE to choose a "Sonic Killer" it would be Spark 3, no questions asked. Comparing two things is a normal thing to do, just look at Sonic and Mario. Endless comparisons between those two, hell, Sonic's entire existence was born because the devs of Sonic found it fun to speedrun Mario levels, so they made their own. I would and could write more, but you wouldn't read an in depth multi-paragraph explanation of why I like this game would you?

I don't think him saying Sparks 3 is better than most 3D Sonic games is a fact. It's more like an opinion and in my opinion, I disagree with. Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and Sonic Frontiers blow Sparks the Electric Jester 3 out of the water in my opinion.
@buhbuh1727 Жыл бұрын
@@Diogo85 I'd say the gameplay is fairly more fundamentally sound compared to some of the 3D games. Spark 3 takes after the Adventure style and builds on it, which was what a lot of people were looking for. I won't say Spark 3 is better than all 3D Sonic games, the only games that beat it imo are the Adventure games, and Unleashed and maybe Gens (Gens just nerfed a lot from Unleashed imo) But Spark 3's controls and physics blow Frontiers out of the water imo. With Frontiers, you're glued to terrain, and you lose all momentum when trying to boost jump, you also have an awkward slowdown after boosting, no deceleration, and the awkward stop after lightdashing, and I probably missed a few there. Spark 3 carried out how Sonic could, and should control in an open world environment imo, and the Adventure games and Spark showed that. There is more to these games like story and all, but I liked the story that frontiers was going for, but it felt overdramatic, and it was rushed towards the end. Spark just goes for a simple story, although it seems silly at times lmao. I think story is the only thing I could give frontiers over spark. My favorite Sonic game is Sonic Adventure 2, and Unleashed is the Sonic game I consider the best in the series
@Diogo85 Жыл бұрын
@@buhbuh1727 Unleashed and Generations are goated.
@buhbuh1727 Жыл бұрын
@@Diogo85 Truly yeah, I just prefer Unleashed for its originality, and how it puts the player directly in the perspective of Sonic, but putting split second reaction obstacles in the way. Although, Gens reimagines beloved levels from the series, and its level design is more expanded upon than Unleashed's.
