Benin Serpent? You mean, the previous Oba of Benin? very funny. So many hidden institutions approached Gowon to convince him against the aburi accord, including the former Oba of Benin( He was the prince regent as at then). The biggest of them all, were some prominent members of the British High Commission to Nigeria. The previous Oba of Benin was afraid that the IGBOS will limit the Benin kingdom to a piece of bread if the Aburi accord stood. One of the reasons for the accord was to go back to regionalism and he feared that other IGBO speakers of the Old midwest, might want to rejoin with their east central brethren. He had to act fast. The Benin Monarchy have always viewed The IGBOS as a big threat but we are actually no a threat. All we want is for them to literally "keep quiet", while we rebuild our relationship with our "South South" IGBO brethren, that are still under their hegemony. Whether they like it or not, it must happen. this movement is far bigger than them.
