The thing that breaks me emotionally about this series (and why Yakuza 3 is so important IMO), is that Kazama clearly wanted Sunflower Orphanage to feel like a home to Kiryu, Yumi and Nishiki but it never really was. Kazama couldnt visit very often, and when he did all Kiryu and Nishiki could see was a big important Yakuza man, so they wanted to leave the orphanage and follow in his footsteps as soon as they could. In Kiwami/Yakuza 1 Kazama asks Kiryu if he's visited the orphanage recently, and Kiryu says "no" and that he doesnt think the others have either, Kazama responds saying that they should since it's the closest thing to a home any of these guys have. Compare that to Kiryu's orphanage, where he lives there permanently with the kids and shows them real fatherly love. Spends actual time (time, there's no substitute for time spent with your family, if you know you know). And look how happy they all seem, how much they want to look out for one another and keep treating the orphanage as a home... And I guess kinda importantly, not leave with delusions of becoming big strong Yakuza members like their father-figure. So Yakuza 3 (and the games that follow) really feel like Kiryu managed to accomplish something that Kazama had hoped for with his orphanage, but never quite managed.

Y3 will always have a special place in the series. It's perhaps the most important installment as far as Kiryu's characterisation is concerned, and it introduced a very central gameplay element to the series - karaoke. P.S. Get enough hearts with Mika and you can go to karaoke. She sings Saturday Night Lover. Her singing is pretty good.
