Yale is is one of the leading choices for lock and security solutions, having been a trusted brand for a long time. So it's no surprise Yale is stepping up its smart home space and HomeKit. Although the Yale Linus is not the company's first smart lock, its Yales first HomeKit enabled smart lock.

Yale sent over the Linus smart lock along with the Keypad, Yale Connect Hub and the adjustable cylinder. I have had it all installed for just over 4 months to complete this review. So if you want to find out about my experience with the install, setup, the Yale Access App, HomeKit control and automations. Then continue reading this Yale Linus review to find out more and if this could be the smart lock for you.

@@HomeKitAuthority no not yet, moving house tomorrow so I don’t know what kind of locks they are. There’s 3 doors, 2 of the same on the front facade and one different on the rear facade. I know they’re not lift up handles, could possibly be a deadlock...maybe. I also know that when the 2 front doors close they auto lock then on a night you double lock I’m sure. I think the lock is literally just a cylinder shape, but I think that’s really all I know because I don’t have much knowledge about locks

Great review; thanks. One basic thing I don’t understand… does this smart lock NOT work with a door that uses a latch style (the ones you just pull shut behind you to lock). In other words - if I switch to a smart lock, do I now need to remember to lock my door as I leave home instead of just pulling the door shut behind me as I leave?

Hi, thanks for the detailed info. Two questions, when visitor uses keypad and leaves again how they lock the door again using the keypad? Secondly is the keypad incorporated as a device in HomeKit? Like for instance I have a door garage opener and if keypad code used, by automation, the garage door opener would open the garage. Is this possible? Thanks for your reply!

Is it possible to still use the key from outside in order to open the door ? The reason why I am asking is that while testing, everything works fine, except that when I try to use the key from the outside, it appears that I can turn it around at infinity without any movement on the cilinder. Is there any way to resolve this. Because from what I understood it would still be possible to also use the key to open the door from the outside. Bought together with a compatible cylinder (Euro Profile).

I wish the keypad would be smart enough to tell the lock to pull the latch even if the door isn't locked. I always have to lock the door by pressing the "yale" button then unlock it with my code. I have set auto lock to 2 minutes so that's fine most of the time. But when you forget something, then you have to do the lock/unlock dance. Also, what good is it to have a door sensor if the lock doesn't use it when autolocking? If I leave the door wide open for more than 2 minutes then the auto lock kicks in completely ignoring that the door is opened....

Great video. Question for you. Do you think that the Conexis L1 Smart Lock is a better option overall, despite not being HomeKit compatible? My thinking is that it’s slimmer, keyless (you can use a fob or card) and still has almost all of the same smart features - with the exception of automations obviously and geo-fenced auto unlock (which is nice, granted). I’m a big HomeKit fan but not loving the bulk of the Linus or all that twisting to get it open from the inside. Plus not clear to me how it works with multipoint door locks. Thanks!

You mentioned that you were not able to test the autolock option because you have to raise the door handle in order to lock your door. I have the same situation. Question 1: If I automatically raise the door handle each time I go out of my house or enter the house, would that make the autolock option work? Question 2: I read multiple comments on the Google play store that people were having problems with the lock not automatically connecting to the phone’s bluetooth when approaching the door or going away from the door when leaving the house, so the autolock functionality didn’t work properly for them. Did you experience any similar issues? Since the autolock option is the main reason that I am considering on buying this lock I would expect it to work flawlessly.
Great review by the way! Keep up the good work!

Great review as always, I’ve had the Linus/keypad/connect set up installed for about 6 weeks now myself and very impressed. What I particularly like is as this only sits on the inside it does not change the look of the door from the outside. I do also have the pin pad as back up but it’s TINY and well hidden at the bottom corner of the door. I would absolutely recommend ALWAYS getting the cylinder with it, it’s £35 and fits so much nicer. The auto-unlock on approach works really well, you generally hear the ping just as you get about 3 ft from the door. I also have a multipoint door and once you’re in the habit of lifting the handle the auto unlock works fine. (Yes I forgot once in the beginning and it failed) One future thing I’d love to see is more integration to Apple CarPlay, wouldn’t it be great if an unlock button popped up on your screen as you parked up?

I ordered one but then sent it back for two reasons First security - For me and this won't be for all, I have no letter box so have no risk when leaving key in the inside door so that adds a level of security as its harder to pick or use a lost key to open due to how euro locks work - Plus the ABS lock I have is higher rated so I would decrease security on two counts for benefit of smarts which leads onto smart functionality Smart Limitation - Due to a lot of us using multi point locking in UK, this means its only good for opening the door thus only 50% smart - Ideally Id use the smarts to lock to door after closing or a routine to check if door unlocked and relock for instance neither of which are possible due to multi point requirement of lifting handle. In all honesty I think Yale need better competition in this arena as they seem to never get these things quite right, or want to create pay walls within product, aka just like it was with alarms until the likes of Ring and the like turned up they happily carried on treading water in product offerings.

I must be the only person unhappy with this lock. When I try to come home the lock is constantly jammed and I have to either take out the normal key or pull hard towards myself and then it opens. Also, twice the lock has unlocked without my permission and there's no record of that on the app. I was sitting in the living room on my computer when I heard the door unlock. I couldn't check on it immediately because I was in a conference call online however, when it was finished I was shocked to find the door ajar.

It always make me feel as it is covering almost quarter of the door while my Utopic R is almost invisible on my door. As motor performance my Yale Linus is like a turtle near my Desi Utopic R's motor speed. Power of the motor is also much less than Utopic R. Only the lack of Utopic R is there is no Wi-Fi hub yet but i can unlock my door anytime from my phone by creating offline user codes remotely. @@HomeKitAuthority you have to replace you multi lock park that go’s in your door, for a key wind lock rather than a lever leaver lock. If you google “multi lock key wind your then be able to allow the smart lock to engage all the multi point mechanisms No handle required ! Better still if your current manufacturer of multi lock does a key wind set it might just be a few screws to replace 👍🏽 I was really disheartened to find that just plopping a smart lock on a multi lock door doesn’t really add to much functionality. Changing to a key wind ( especially if your smart lock also offers a hold back for the latch which Dana lock does) it opens up a huge amount of options I was hoping for from the start!

I Think aqara have one that work Outdoor, not the N100 but they have one for outdoor. But with that lock the inside part is the electronic and outside is just a normal cilinder

If you use dummy switch in homebridge and set up an automation for the door to lock/unlock when the dummy switch is operated it gets around the Apple confirmation

Sounds like it’s not as well developed as the Nuki smart door lock, which also retrofits over your existing UK / EU door lock.

I have only had hands on time with the nuki. But in my view the build quality, motor performance an stability is better than Nuki

@@HomeKitAuthority I installed a Nuki for a couple of weeks with its Bridge. I send the Nuki back because it's noisy, it wobbles as if it were going to break loose from the door but the major issue is that to remain consistently available in Homekit it needs to be within Bluetooth range from the Homekit Hub (Appe TV) in my case. Which would mean for my quite a large house that I had to move my front door into the living room or my TV (attached to the Apple TV) next to the front door. I understand that the same issue exists with the Yale Linus? Am I correct? Tks

I’ll wait until someone releases a lock that can also lift the handle. Otherwise it’s only half a solution

Sorry, That design is a deal killer. Looks clunky (very 1980s). The Homekit interface seems clunky with far too slow of a response. I'll be waiting for a more elegant design that responds quickly in HomeKit. I suspect those batteries won't last the full 5 or 6 months, and having to change them is just more scheduled fiddling that I just don't like doing. I have EVE door sensors and those battery replacements are always annoying and they don't last nearly as long as Eve claims. We all want to use Homekit where-ever possible to make life simpler, but tech for tech sake doesn't cut it. If I can do it with a key faster, they've failed as a homekit product. No thread either? really? No sale.
