Andrew Robison, the Andrew W. Mellon Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C., analyzes Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s artistic background and development to understand why and how he became the preeminent artist in Rome in the 18th century and one of the greatest printmakers of all time.
