We need more pieces like this with human voices just another instrument in the orchestra. For me, that's what never gets old about this piece.

MS SHAW'S MUSIC IS AWWESOME!!! THANKS!!!

I got to perform this last year (as one of an octet)! the most notable part of this experience was that orchestra and voice were cooperative, rather than competitive, in making sound. I found the "years ago / I forget" section particularly engaging to sing.

A fantastic performance. Lady Caroline Shaw, the composer, who created this piece at the age of 34 or younger is a rising star.

A rising star...do you ever wonder why? What is her music, besides rehashing of stuff done 1000 before. Any undergrad comp student does the same thing.
@patarnababan64405 жыл бұрын
@ , I can't quite understand your statement. Do you mean that this composition is, at most, ordinary?
@KinkyLettuce Жыл бұрын
@@patarnababan6440 I think it means this is a great piece and its just simply that Caroline Shaw was still so young when she created this formidable piece of music and therefore shows a lot of promises in the future

This is indisputably 'beautiful'. But is there a there, there? I think that large scale works need large scale ideas or hierarchical structure. Not finding it--yet.
@eytonshalom5 жыл бұрын
does it HAVE to? why cant it stand on its own quality which is meditative harmonic and beauty...i know what you mean, hierarchy would make it more interesting , if it had no feeling i would not listen, but for me it has a feeling and a texture that appeals to me....its not Bach....the same critique could be made of Glass. but i like a bit of his stuff for solo piano. its like fruit, i like pears, but i love watermelon ...

I find myself wondering the same thing. The piece has lovely sounds but what do the parts add up to? I find it interesting she found a title that alludes to John Adams' Common Tones in Simple Time--which is much more original. I admire Shaw's other work, esp. the Partita and Entr'acte, but this sounds bland and generic.
