I think part of it was it took time for Mamamoo to build up the necessary fan base to win on the shows. They are from a small company, so they didn't start with some of the built in advantages that a large company provides in media access, a fan network from senior groups at the same company helping to market you, and the money to market the group heavily through financing variety productions featuring the group or simply getting a lot of advertising out there. Mamamoo really had to depend much more on their talent and ability to really perform live at a level not usually seen in K-pop and have that build positive buzz about a group that could really sing live and brought this incredible energy to their live performances. It takes time to have word of mouth marketing be effective. Eventually it reaches critical mass though if your performances are always good and you perform often enough. The most effective marketing tool there is, is a friend's testimonial telling you about this incredible group they just discovered and having their excitement rub off on you when they drag you to a live show and the group is really good and the fans are really into it.

I remember all of this man, saw them growing up and grow as musicians and accomplish so many things. The rise of these women was amazing. I remember a couple years ago you would ask someone if they knew them and they probably heard of them or not know them at all and now you can ask anyone and they’ll tell you yes of course we know them! Remember how they opened up at kcon ny and and only some people knew of them and when I saw them in kcon LA years later the cheers man! Hearing people around me “mamamoo is next!” “Dude it’s mamamoo!” I’m incredibly proud of them and this group will always have a special place in my heart.❤️ and now I’ll make sure to do the same and support their rbw siblings, and right now I’m giving lots of love and adoration for ppk who I also saw growing up💜

The thing is that if a group debuts in big 3, they become popular even if they are not the super level talented. (Not hating on big 3 groups). But these groups who are amazingly talented but debut in a small company don't get that popularity. Mamamoo is a great eg of such a group. Blackpink is a 4 member group same as Mamamoo, they also have talent but they got popular because they were in a reknowned company like YG. But to be honest MMM is better than BP in many ways . Their vocals are golden, BP vocals are quite a lot weak than MMM, even if they don't have hard dances as BP, I don't think BP has that hard dances so dance level is same. BP is known to be beautiful ver. of 2NE1, so it's just that they are visually stronger than MMM. But the Korean beauty standards are very strict. MMM visual, Solar is quite beautiful and fits in the std 70% whereas BP visual, Jisoo fits 80%, not a big difference. Mamamoo have a lot better stage presence than BP. BP members speak English very well and that adds them an opportunity to have a better stand internationally, where as mmm are not good English speakers so they don't get invited to international interviews and that's why they are not recognize internationally much. Many say that BP are trained to be idols and MMM as artists, but both have trained to come in the same industry. MMM are so much better than many groups, if they were a big 3 group, it would have been a real world revolution. (I took BP just as an example, I am not hating BP in any manner. Blinks don't come at me. I'm a blink as well.)
