Combination of a collect from last and this spring. Mostly sub alpine Fir Bonsai and some Spruce Bonsai. For both of these collects I wasn't focused on making videos but on collecting tree and thus limited footage of me collecting. Just today I videoed some of the trees that I collected, so you get a chance to see them a year later and for some just 5 weeks after collection. I talk about various bonsai designs I have for the future. Next spring will be a big year for these trees as I begin the bonsai styling process. I hope to go "yamadori" again this early fall and so I'll make sure to take more footage so I can post a better video. I hope this inspires you to do more bonsai. Collecting trees is super fun make sure you have a permit or are on private land that you ask permission from the owner. Something really gratifying about collecting your own trees and supporting them along their bonsai journey.

Wow amazing! Yamadori is not possible in Japan now. Too much nature has been destroyed. I'm envious of your country's natural environment. Outside of Japan, the word yamadori has taken on a life of its own. I think it's important to have a balance. Anyway, I envy you🥺

Great video. Question.. when potting your collected trees, do you clean most of the field dirt off of the roots or do you just plant it with the soil that it has already?
@kootenaybonsaicanada
@kootenaybonsaicanada 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I leave as much of the original dirt as possible. I trim many of the tips of the roots and cut off any that are severely damaged in the collect. I place the tree/roots close to the bottom of the container (minimal soil from root base to bottom of the container). On the second report I do more major work on clearing the original soil but I still leave about half untouched. This can make watering difficult. I do more heavy cleaning of the original soil on deciduous versus conifers. Hope this helps😀👍

Montana, USA here. How do you winter over your yamadopi? Bonsai?? Does everything go into a green house or are some left outside?
@kootenaybonsaicanada
@kootenaybonsaicanada 3 жыл бұрын
It gets about -15 Celsius or 5 Fahrenheit at coldest where I live, usually for only a few days. We have lots of snow which insulates the trees. Mine go all outdoors heeled into the ground with no greenhouse or cover. So far results have been good. I may try bringing some into my basement for winter. All my trees so far are collected in the spring which gives them time to build roots, settle, and get strong. I am going to try collecting some in the fall and so I’ll see how they do overwinter. From what I gather it’s a lot warmer in your area so you should be ok but I’d still heel them into the soil, also depending on your snow fall it may or may not insulate your trees. Hope that helps. Most of my trees are native to my area and thus can take the cold climate. I did have a Rosemery die outside, I have two that I’m going to try to keep outside this year and my fingers will be crossed 🤞. Thanks for commenting
