Japanese people are tired to see foreigners cosplaying in the street, and to consider the country as a big playground. The history of Japan is so rich, that, yes it’s a shameful behavior that foreigners ignore it in favor of a frivolous "culture". Moreover, modern Japanese culture is much more popular among foreigners than in Japan. The true Japanese culture is full of traditions, first, there is Japanese mythology wich is very interesting (The Kojiki for example), everything that belongs to folklore, gastronomy, japanese sports, theater, poetry or even music... Japan also has a fascinating literature (Kawabata, Mishima, Kenzaburō, Sōseki, etc...). So, yes, to consider the culture of the past 15 years as an important part of Japanese culture while sweeping away all the traditions and culture present for centuries is just ignorance and stupidity.

People who do things like Iaido aren't samurai, but they usually try to uphold the virtues of Bushido and meditate and stuff as best they can apply to modern life. ...So I guess being 'samurai' is more of a philosophy and mindset nowadays? 🤔
