The true natural partner to the M-2 amp and the T-2 tuner, was the venerable C-2a preamp which retailed for $950 dollars. The C-4 was a much cheaper version of the world-class C-2a. I should know. My parents bought me the entire Yamaha flagship system in 1980 which included the aforementioned M-2 amp, C-2a preamp and T-2 tuner, along with the Yamaha PX-3 turntable ($750) and the gorgeous NS-1000 ebony edition speakers ($2,000/pr). I know. I was a lucky kid and I still own all of these wonderful units today (They are not the actual units I owned in the 80's. I re-purchased them as an adult off eBay in the last 15 years) P.S. The C-2a is built to the same standard as the T-2 tuner and M-2 amplifier. Again, because it was their flagship preamp.

the C4 is an amazing sounding pre-amp but has a lot of problematic parts in it. the varistors are prone to failure, same with some minor transistor types, and alot of the electrolytics will be leaking by now. the trimmer pots are quite awful and the thermal design has some issues. some transistors and resistors are getting extremely hot, which is not great for heat sensitive components near that, which is also true for traces and solder joints. if you think about getting one, be prepared to do the full restoration with about 80-90 parts needing replacement, most of that being electrolytic capacitors, and reflowing all solder joints. but after a full restoration it is an insanely lovely sounding preamp.

Nice! Just a note, with new correct incandescent bulbs the white button is orange. When done correctly they are not even warm. The green on the M-2 is very close to the correct color. Thanks for the wiring options for the stock connectors.

I know that this video is 4-years old but I'm just now happening upon it. FYI, in the era that these were out, in the "separates" Yamaha had three series going. The "2" series, which was the best, the "4" series, which was the middle and the "7" series, which was the lower cost. There wasn't necessarily a complete series (there wasn't a T-4 tuner, as I recall and the 7 series was just the Tuner, I think) The reason why you found the C4 to look to be "cheaper" than the Tuner is that you are comparing two different series. There was the C2 and C2a preamps that would have been part of the same series. When I bought mine (new, in the early 80s) I went for the M-2 amplifier, C-4 Preamp and the T-7 tuner. I wasn't about to spend that much money on the "radio" that was the T2 tuner. Yeah, it is a great tuner but, in the end, it is still just the radio and wasn't my primary source. The T-7 did just fine. The C-4 fit my needs better than the C-2a and was cheaper to boot.

I have a C4 and a pair of ns1000m’s i have yet to use the C4 because i don’t have an actual power amp. i want to take my preamp to someone to have it looked over before i mess with it because it’s been sitting for years but all the lights work on it lol. any tips for getting a good setup going? M4 or M2? or something entirely different? i would love to keep it all yamaha but i want to run two channels of speakers at the same time occasionally and you said that’s not a good idea with the m2.. i’m new to hifi audio i’m only 20 and i’d love any help i can get, thank you for the great video i learned a lot!!

I love my T2 Yamaha tuner. I picked it up real cheap. But can you explain why it was so expensive, I checked the cost when working for an audio video shop and at the time the cost in Canada was 950 Canadian for A LARGE OPERATION, NOT A MOM AND POP SHOP. I love the thick top and side plates.

Which key did you use to open up the main front panel switches? I have tried so many keys but none of them worked at all. Thank you very much indeed!!

If you mean the rec-out,input and phono switches, you can use a 1,5mm hexagonal (allen)key.
